The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has begun work on a state-of-the-art bus storage facility in Lorton, VA, that is expected to house newer buses and generate 300 construction jobs. When it opens in 2015, the new facility will replace an existing facility in Old Town Alexandria, which has far exceeded its useful life and cannot accommodate the fleet’s newer Metrobuses. That facility will be demolished, enabling future redevelopment in its historic neighborhood.
