Crowds Welcome New Denver Union Station
An estimated 10,000 people gathered July 26 to commemorate the gala reopening of Denver Union Station as a multimodal transportation hub that also features retail, dining options, and a luxury hotel.
The station brings together three Denver Regional Transportation District (RTD) light rail lines, numerous bus routes, Amtrak, two free downtown shuttles, and—beginning in 2016—three commuter rail lines serving Denver International Airport and other regional destinations. A fourth commuter rail line is scheduled to open in 2018.
The businesses located in the Grand Hall are all locally operated, including four full-service restaurants, a Denver-based coffee shop, a branch of a popular bookstore, and the rail-themed Crawford Hotel.
RTD worked with the Denver Union Station Project Authority and numerous government and business partners to make the project a reality. In 2001, RTD partnered with the city and county of Denver, Colorado DOT, and the Denver Regional Council of Governments to purchase the Union Station building from a private developer.
The interior renovation restores Denver Union Station to the days when it was a major intercity transportation hub, stirring up memories in longtime riders. For example, 87-year-old Lois Seymour—a longtime Denver resident who now lives in California—made one last visit to tour the station and share memories dating back to her childhood. “If people don’t think this is great, then you all need to tell them to get out and stay out,” she said through tears. “It is more than I could have ever imagined and I’m so thankful to have seen it.”
