CA Awards $390 Million in Transportation Grants; Cap and Trade Auction Funds Programs

The California State Transportation Agency recently announced $390 million in Transit and Intercity Capital Program grants for 14 public transportation projects, funded through the state’s cap and trade auction proceeds.

This program supports public transportation while reducing harmful greenhouse gas emission levels. The grants will provide approximately 10 percent of funding for the projects selected, valued at a total of almost $3.9 billion, and are expected to lead to a reduction of more than 4.1 million tons of carbon dioxide statewide.

Los Angeles Metro received two of the grants totaling $109 million: $69.2 million for the Red/Purple Line Core Capacity Improvements Project, which will allow trains to turn around quickly at Union Station so they can run every four minutes on each line at peak hours compared to 10 minutes currently, and $40 million for the new Airport Connector Station that will connect light rail riders on the Green and Crenshaw/LAX lines to an automatic people mover that will serve Los Angeles International Airport, being built and operated by Los Angeles World Airports.

Other major grants include $82 million to the LOSSAN Rail Corridor Agency for track improvements and railcar leases serving Metrolink, the North County Transit District’s Coaster and Amtrak; $45 million to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency for the purchase of 10 light rail vehicles to increase rider capacity; $30 million to the Sacramento Regional Transit District for construction of a new downtown-riverfront streetcar line; $28 million to the Orange County Transportation Authority for a streetcar connecting two communities and system-wide mobile ticketing; and $20 million to the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority for the BART Silicon Valley Phase 2 Extension, which will connect BART to California’s high-speed rail network in 2026.
