Lane Transit District Adds 14,000 Hours of Service

The Lane Transit District (LTD), Eugene, OR, rolled out one of its largest service overhauls in decades on Sept. 18, investing $1.2 million to add 14,000 hours of new service this year—a 5 percent increase over last year—to improve frequency, span of service and coverage areas in the second year of a three-year, $3 million service investment.

LTD General Manager A.J. Jackson said, “We are excited to improve service on routes where the community asked for more frequent and later service. These investments will add better mobility options to help move people to and from school, work and recreation. LTD thanks the community for their input and support of transit services.”

LTD’s three-year plan to improve transit service is funded by an increase in the employer payroll tax. Last year, LTD invested $800,000 to increase frequency along a major route and run buses later on weeknights.

The additional service restores cutbacks necessitated by funding shortfalls during the recession; LTD cut about 14 percent of its service (40,000 hours), with the largest cuts, almost 12 percent, in 2010.

Since 2014-2015, LTD has restored approximately 30,000 hours of service, including the new 14,000 hours. Next year the agency plans to invest another $1 million to restore service to pre-recession levels.

The current investment focuses on increasing service on the system’s most used routes, including EmX BRT serving downtown Eugene and Springfield (among other areas) and several fixed routes. One route currently accounts for 3,000 boardings per weekday; that route and EmX carry more than 25 percent of LTD’s annual boardings.

While this year’s service investment does not make substantial changes to current routes and service, LTD plans to redesign bus service in west Eugene next year in conjunction with the launch of West Eugene EmX BRT.
