R Is for Ready: RTD Prepares for R Line Launch

As Passenger Transport went to press, Denver’s Regional Transportation District (RTD) was preparing to commemorate the launch of its newest light rail line, the R Line, with a ribbon-cutting and grand opening ceremony Feb. 24 at the Iliff Station, followed by free rides and celebrations at stations along the line.

The 10.5-mile R Line, part of RTD’s FasTracks construction program, extends existing track and connects the A Line (commuter rail) with the H Line (light rail), serves the city of Aurora and provides easy connections to Denver International Airport, the Denver Tech Center and downtown Denver. The route includes eight new stations and four new park-and-rides.

The official ceremony is scheduled to include remarks from RTD General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Dave Genova, Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan, Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, RTD Chair Larry Hoy, Kiewit Infrastructure Co. Company Senior Vice President and District Manager Craig Briggs and Aurora City Manager Skip Noe.

Revenue service begins the following day. To help passengers navigate the light rail system, RTD ambassadors will be at all R Line stations to answer questions during the first week of regular service.

Members of the media interview RTD General Manager and CEO Dave Genova during a preliminary run on the R Line. RTD's new R Line train in advance of the introduction of service.
