BART Starts Construction on Concord Station Plaza

The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) broke ground April 17 on new construction and renovations at the Concord Station, the system’s original east terminus from its opening in 1973 until the line was extended to Pittsburg/Bay Point in 1995.

BART Director Joel Keller said Concord, CA, the largest city in Contra Costa County, is “rapidly becoming a destination for more than just commuters, and these renovations will improve the customer experience and how people connect to our system.” He noted that the original BART station was self-contained and not well integrated with its surroundings, but that the plaza renovation will help people use public transportation to attend downtown events.

The renovations will make over the station plaza, creating a well-lit, tree-lined area with improved illuminated signage. Pedestrian benefits will include a more prominent, raised crosswalk, an added bike lane, energy-efficient lighting and an improved kiss-and-ride zone.

Funding for the $3.2 million project comes from a combination of state Prop 1B, Contra Costa County Measure J and BART sources. The work is expected to take a year.
