Metra, UP Break Ground on West Line Track Project

Metra commuter rail in Chicago and Union Pacific Railroad broke ground April 21 on a $100 million project along the UP West Line that will remove two critical bottlenecks and eliminate delays of both freight and commuter trains.

“We’re extremely happy to be able to launch this project with our partners at Union Pacific,” said Metra Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer Don Orseno. “Adding these track segments will reduce the potential for delays and improve the travel experience for the 30,000 Metra riders who rely on this line each weekday. Residents along the UP West Line will also benefit from shorter wait times at crossings and fewer freight trains idling on the tracks.”

The project—the fourth phase of the UP West Line Improvement Project—will add nearly eight miles of third track in the only two remaining segments that still have two tracks. The first part will add 1.8 miles of third track, followed by another 6.1 miles later this year.

Previous phases of the line improvement project focused on safety enhancements for pedestrians and motorists and upgrades to the signal system.
