Business Members Strongly Advocate for Public Transit Funding on Capitol Hill
Rep.
Sam Graves (R-MO), chair of the Subcommittee on Highways and Transit, House
Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, discussed the importance of
investing in public transportation infrastructure at a Capitol Hill fly-in
conducted by APTA’s Business Member Board of Governors (BMBG) on May 18 during
National Infrastructure Week.
“Direct federal funding of public
transportation must underpin any new initiative,” said APTA Acting President
and CEO Richard White, who
hosted the fly-in’s opening session featuring Graves.
“While financing, public-private partnerships
and regulatory reform are important, those tools require direct federal funding
to be effective. Using existing public transportation programs is the most
efficient way to address our infrastructure needs, create new jobs and boost
private sector growth,” he added.
During the day-long event, BMBG
representatives met with 45 members of Congress and key congressional staff to
advocate for robust public transit funding and to fend off threats to public
transportation programs proposed by the Trump administration.
“As APTA business members, we are
the private piece of the national public transportation industry footprint, and
we are proof that the jobs and economic impact go beyond simply where public
transit systems operate,” said Jeff Wharton, BMBG chair.
“Our supply chain is nation-wide and we
provide manufacturing and construction-related jobs in small towns, rural areas
and urban areas of all sizes," Wharton added.
APTA member businesses also took out a
one-page ad in several Capitol Hill publications to show that private
businesses strongly support public transit investment. See
