A Year of Success for APTF

The American Public Transportation Foundation (APTF) had an immensely successful year in 2017, exceeding the scholarship award record it set the previous year by awarding $149,000 to 29 scholars and public transit professionals.

This record scholarship amount helped APTF reach another important milestone, reaching the $1 million mark in scholarships that have been invested in more than 300 recipients since the foundation was created in 1988. APTF honored this year’s scholarship recipients at an award ceremony during the APTA Annual Meeting & EXPO in Atlanta.

This year, APTF introduced single-year scholarships, which are non-endowed, titled scholarships created and awarded in the same year. The first six single-year scholarships included three created through the fundraising efforts of the Leadership APTA Class of 2017, which raised more than $20,000, and one sponsored by the Mineta Transportation Institute, San Jose State University, and APTF.

The APTF Board of Directors approved its newest named scholarship, the Nathaniel Ford Scholarship, created in honor of the father of APTA Chair Nathaniel P. Ford Sr. following a successful fundraising reception held in honor of the 2017-2018 chair at the annual meeting. This scholarship will be awarded for the first time in 2018 to a minority applicant pursuing studies in the fields of mobility, logistic management, innovation management and/or science technology with the intent to pursue a career in public transportation.

Also in 2017, APTF launched on its website the “Scholar Spotlight” series of interviews with current and past scholarship recipients. The interviews highlight the impact of APTF scholarships on recipients’ careers and how recipients have progressed in the industry.

During the year, the foundation, its board of directors and all donors have worked to further APTF’s mission to increase and retain the number of individuals choosing public transit as a career by providing scholarships and engagement opportunities to deserving students and transit professionals. However, much remains to do. APTF begins its 30th year in 2018, providing new opportunities to participate in the foundation’s efforts and support the next generation of public transit leaders.
