Philanthropic Grants Help Boston Bus Service

BRT services in Arlington, Everett, Cambridge and Watertown, MA, recently received grants of $100,000 each from the Barr Foundation, a Boston philanthropy with a strong environmental agenda.

The grants will pay for the municipalities to work with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority to design and implement pilot projects that demonstrate BRT’s benefits in high-ridership, high-traffic areas. Projects will include trials of dedicated bus lanes and traffic signals synchronized to give priority to buses, and upgrading existing dedicated bus lanes with platform-level boarding platforms.

“These pilot projects will show bus rapid transit’s potential to transform how people in Greater Boston get to where they need to go, and how bus rapid transit can fit within the region’s transportation system,” said Barr’s Mary Skelton Roberts.

Arlington Town Manager Adam Chapdelaine said, “Buses are essential to Arlington commuters. ... We hope this will result in more people taking the bus, fewer people driving to work, and reduced congestion and pollution in the community.”
