Metrolink to Extend Service to Downtown San Bernardino

The San Bernardino County (CA) Transportation Authority (SBCTA), Metrolink commuter rail, Omnitrans in San Bernardino and the city of San Bernardino announced as Passenger Transport went to press that Metrolink will begin providing service to downtown San Bernardino on Dec. 16.

The San Bernardino Transit Center will provide multimodal connections through Omnitrans, including sbX Green Line BRT, and neighboring bus agencies. The Riverside (CA) Transit Agency will begin serving the facility in January.

Two Metrolink lines will extend their service one mile from their current terminus, the Santa Fe Depot, when the transit center opens.

“We are excited to complete the Downtown San Bernardino Passenger Rail Project,” said SBCTA Board President Alan Wapner. “The extension of Metrolink service to downtown San Bernardino will offer local residents more transit options and bring in new patrons for local businesses.”

In addition to the extension, this project included building a new pedestrian overpass at the Santa Fe Depot and grade crossing safety improvements. Arrow, the forthcoming passenger rail service connecting San Bernardino to Redlands at this station, is scheduled to launch in 2021.

Funding for the project included approximately $23 million from FTA, $36 million from state sources and $64 million Measure I and local funds from SBCTA.

Dignitaries celebrate the arrival of Metrolink’s new Tier 4 locomotive in advance of the Dec. 16 opening of a one-mile line extension to the San Bernardino Transit Center.
