Enhanced Security Measures Following Manhattan Attack

The day after the Dec. 11 bomb incident in New York City’s Port Authority Bus Terminal, New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo directed agencies including the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to increase security at high-profile locations throughout the state, including public transit systems, tunnels, bridges and airports.

Public transit systems across North America have increased their security presence in the aftermath of the incident that injured the alleged bomber and three commuters.

“Today we are reminded yet again that the principles of freedom and democracy that New York represents have made us a target for those who seek to disrupt our way of life,” Cuomo said. “Out of an abundance of caution, we are stepping up security measures at high-profile locations and transportation hubs while the investigation progresses.”

Port Authority Police doubled its presence and remained on heightened alert at all the agency’s facilities, including the bus terminal and World Trade Center public transit hub. MTA increased its patrols and surveillance to provide more protection across all its agencies, including an enhanced uniformed and plainclothes presence in Penn Station, Grand Central Terminal and other major MTA Long Island Rail Road and MTA Metro-North Railroad stations. The MTA works closely with the New York Police Department to secure the city’s subways and buses.

New Yorkers can report on activity that seems suspicious here.
