In Memoriam: Dan Reichard Jr., APTA Hall of Fame Member

Dan Reichard Jr., one of the founders of Genfare in 1980 and a longtime APTA member, died April 19 in Columbus, OH. Reichard, who was in his 97th year, retired from the company at age 72 but continued to work on a part-time basis until his late 80s.

Kim Green, APTA secretary-treasurer and executive director at Genfare, said, “Dan Reichard Jr. was my teacher, associate, mentor and most importantly, my very good friend. We met in 1975 when I started in the industry. Dan was a World War II hero, a devoted family man and a significant contributor to the transit industry. He helped to establish much of the modern-day fare collection systems approaches for Genfare. His contributions to APTA for well over 40 years helped the business members gain acceptance and approval within the APTA organization and helped the industry make important progress. He was involved with the American Public Transportation Foundation for many years and has a scholarship in his name.”

Green continued, “He was a fine gentleman, he touched many people and he will be missed by all who knew him. But all of us that had the pleasure of knowing him are better people because of him.”

A member of the APTA Hall of Fame and the recipient of the APTA Outstanding Business Member Award in 1995, Reichard was a founding member of the Business Member Board of Governors (BMBG), then called the Associate Member Board of Governors. He attended every APTA Annual Meeting and BMBG meeting since the association’s founding in 1974; the photo shows him addressing the BMBG at the 2017 Annual Meeting & EXPO in Atlanta. He also was a former board member of the Central Ohio Transit Authority.
