Meet Daniel Pineda!

Daniel Pineda
Video Production Specialist
Communications & Marketing Department

What are your primary responsibilities at APTA?

My main role is to visually convey APTA’s mission by showcasing the association’s success stories through video. I fulfill that commitment by producing on-camera interviews, scriptwriting, video shooting and editing. The videos I create are used at APTA’s major conferences, on the APTA website and on the association’s social media platforms.

I work very closely with Jack Gonzalez, APTA’s senior director-marketing and sales, on videos for the Opening General Sessions of APTA’s major conferences and also on new videos for APTAtv. I also work with different APTA departments on their special projects.

What initiatives or programs have you worked on at APTA of which you are particularly proud?

I am particularly proud of the highlight videos I produce covering APTA’s major conferences and holiday videos thanking APTA members for their service to public transportation throughout the year. I am also very proud of our weekly social media campaign, “Transit Funding Tuesday,” which showcases why federal dollars are so crucial to public transportation organizations throughout the country.

APTA is really committed to expanding its use of video as an additional tool for communicating with members, stakeholders and the public and for sharing the many ways in which the association serves the membership.

To what extent do you have direct contact with APTA members?

I interact with members during APTA’s major conferences, where I capture and highlight the proceedings. During conferences, I also have the opportunity to interview members regarding their experiences at the event and to share updates from their agencies and businesses. This is a great chance for members to share information on camera about exciting projects and initiatives.

It is always great to hear directly from APTA members about the projects they are proud to be working on and how passionate they are about serving the public in our industry.

I also enjoy hearing from APTA members when they like one of our videos. I particularly remember the compliments we received from an FTA representative on our intro video montage for the Opening General Session at the 2017 Legislative Conference. Conference attendees were dancing to the music of that video, which was a great sight to see!

How did you come to be at APTA?

I studied broadcast journalism at The American University in Washington, DC, graduating 10 years ago. The new wave of journalism, “backpack journalism” (where you video shoot and edit your own stories), inspired my journey into video editing.

After college, I produced a television show on C-SPAN 2 titled “Close Up at the Newseum” with the Close Up Foundation. The show broadcast at the Newseum at the Knight Studio, just blocks away from the Capitol building, where each week we brought students face-to-face with current events and the workings of the government and the press. After that show concluded, following my first year, I edited promotional videos for the foundation for about seven years before coming to APTA.

I first heard of APTA in 2016 when there was an opening for a video production specialist. I researched the association and saw the dedication and commitment of APTA toward its members and of the members toward public transportation and the community.

Do you have any professional or other affiliations?

I am a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and also a member of the United States Tennis Association.

Could you tell us something about yourself that might surprise us?

My passion for storytelling continues as, in my spare time, I have been co-anchoring the “Arlington Weekly News” public access television program in Arlington, VA, for 10 years.

I am also an avid tennis player and enjoy competing in tournaments locally and around the country. One of my favorite tournaments last year was the Banana Open Challenge at the Palmetto Dunes Resort in Hilton Head, SC. I was a finalist in the 4.0 singles and won the championship in the 4.0 doubles.

I also enjoyed the Holiday Singles Tournament in College Park, MD, where I won the 4.0 singles championship. I recently got bumped up to 4.5 (the United States Tennis Association uses the National Tennis Rating Program for determining levels of competition for association league play).
