Five Agencies Earn Gold Awards for Safety, Security

APTA announced the recipients of its annual Bus Safety & Security Excellence Awards during the conference to recognize public transit agencies for innovative programs dedicated to improving safety and security for their employees, passengers and the public.

APTA Chair Nathaniel P. Ford Sr., chief executive officer, Jacksonville (FL) Transportation Authority, and APTA President and CEO Paul P. Skoutelas presented the awards.

The following agencies received Gold Awards:

Bus safety: public transportation systems providing fewer than four million annual passenger trips, Knoxville (TN) Area Transit; more than four million and fewer than 20 million annual passenger trips, Santa Monica’s (CA) Big Blue Bus; and more than 20 million annual passenger trips, Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority.

Bus security: public transportation systems providing more than four million and fewer than 20 million annual passenger trips, Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority/Metro, Cincinnati, and more than 20 million annual passenger trips, Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Houston.

The following certificates of merit were also presented:

Safety excellence: public transportation systems providing fewer than four million annual passenger trips, Lee County Transit, Fort Myers, FL; more than four million and fewer than 20 million annual passenger trips, Palm Tran, West Palm Beach, FL; and more than 20 million annual passenger trips, Metro Transit, Minneapolis-St. Paul.

Security excellence: public transportation systems providing more than four million and fewer than 20 million annual passenger trips, Transit Authority of River City, Louisville, KY, and more than 20 million annual passenger trips, King County Metro Transit Division/DOT, Seattle.

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority earned the Gold Award-Safety for systems providing more than 20 million annual passenger trips. SORTA in Cincinnati received the Gold Award-Security for systems providing more than four million and fewer than 20 million annual passenger trips.

Knoxville (TN) Area Transit was recognized with the Gold Award-Safety for systems providing fewer than four million annual passenger trips.

Big Blue Bus, Santa Monica, CA, received the Gold Award-Safety for systems providing more than four million and fewer than 20 million annual passenger trips.

The Gold Award-Security for systems providing more than 20 million annual passenger trips went to Houston’s Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County.
