WMATA Named Grand Champion at 2018 Bus Roadeo

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) took the top spot this year and was crowned the Grand Champion at APTA’s 43rd Annual International Bus Roadeo, earning the highest combined team score for both operators and maintainers.

The Orange County (CA) Transportation Authority (OCTA) team took second-place overall achievement honors, while the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District, Oakland, CA, placed third. A total of 87 operators and 43 maintenance teams participated in this year’s event, held in conjunction with the APTA Bus & Paratransit Conference in Tampa, FL.

“The roadeo highlights how the incredible professionals in our industry strive to provide safe and reliable transportation to their riders every day. I congratulate the winners and all the participants who displayed excellent skills and precision,” said APTA President and CEO Paul P. Skoutelas.

Kevin Grady, representing the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, placed first among operators of 40-foot buses. Second place went to Gabe Beliz, driving for the Washington State Transit Association in Olympia, and Robert Miles of WMATA took third place.

Among operators of 35-foot buses, Jeremiah Gardner of the Greater Lynchburg (VA) Transit Company won first place, followed by Robert Wood of Intercity Transit, Olympia, WA, second place, and Oscar Zamora, Corpus Christi (TX) Regional Transportation Authority, third.

Foothill Transit, West Covina, CA, took top honors in the maintenance competition, which tests mechanics’ abilities to troubleshoot mechanical problems and fix them quickly, followed by OCTA in second place and WMATA in third.

In addition to recognizing excellence among bus operators and mechanics, APTA honored John Ybarra of the Norwalk (CA) Transit System as the winner of the Customer Service Challenge Award. This competition judges professionalism, customer service skills and problem-solving skills among bus operators.

WMATA was named the Grand Champion of APTA’s 43rd Annual International Bus Roadeo. APTA President and CEO Paul P. Skoutelas, far left, and APTA Vice Chair David Stackrow Sr., far right, recognized all the honorees.
