APTA Teaches Transit Safety in Chile

APTA recently partnered with the Association of Latin American Metros and Subways (ALAMYS) to conduct a first of its kind Introduction to Transit Safety Course in Santiago, Chile, attended by 22 members from nine different countries in Central and South America.

Instructors were APTA Director of Safety Brian Alberts and APTA Director of Security, Risk and Emergency Management Polly Hanson, along with Sean Cagan, chief safety officer from Houston’s Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County.

Topics addressed during the two-and-a-half-day course included the concepts of Safety Management Systems (SMS), how to define a transit safety culture, development of a safety culture survey and safety checklist, as well as the components of performing a safety management audit. Participants also learned to identify hazards and risks and took part in hands-on group exercises.

The course also included a tour of Metro de Santiago’s new Line 6 and the agency’s command center.

APTA looks forward to exploring future collaboration opportunities with ALAMYS.

APTA’s Brian Alberts and Polly Hanson (front row: third and fourth from left, respectively) instruct public transit representatives from across Central and South America in transit safety best practices.
