Rail Safety Week Is Sept. 23-29

The first joint U.S.-Canada observance of #RailSafetyWeek will take place Sept. 23-29. Operation Lifesaver Inc. and Operation Lifesaver Canada, nonprofit rail safety education and awareness organizations, will partner with public transit agencies throughout the two countries to empower the public to stay safe around all rail modes.

Every year, 2,100 people in North America are killed or seriously injured when they engage in unsafe behavior around tracks and trains. Operation Lifesaver works to prevent these needless incidents.

This year, Operation Lifesaver Inc. and Operation Lifesaver Canada are launching a new rail safety public-awareness campaign, “#STOPTrackTragedies.” The campaign features seven videos, each telling the personal stories of people affected by rail crossing or trespassing incidents, including victims, friends and family members, locomotive engineers and first responders. One video will be released each day over the course of Rail Safety Week and the full campaign will be available on Operation Lifesaver Inc.’s website. The campaign will be shared on social media in North America and on billboard ads in Canada.

APTA President and CEO Paul P. Skoutelas said, “It is critical to help communities learn more about safety when their residents are near light rail, commuter rail lines and streetcars, so we applaud this initiative by Operation Lifesaver.”

Operation Lifesaver is also encouraging public transit agencies to use the #RailSafetyWeek and #STOPTrackTragedies hashtags on their social media channels. If agencies are planning an event or would like to participate in one, they can contact their Operation Lifesaver State Coordinators here.
