FTA Announces $84.5 Million in Low-No Grants

FTA has announced that 52 projects in 41 states will receive a total of $84.5 million for Fiscal Year 2018 through the Low- or No-Emission (Low-No) Grant program.

The Low-No program funds the deployment of public transit buses and infrastructure that use advanced propulsion technologies. Eligible projects include the purchase or lease of buses powered by systems such as hybrid or battery-electric engines, as well as related infrastructure investments such as charging stations.

“FTA is proud to partner with transit providers across the country to support their transit priorities. The participation from our local partners shows a dedication to improving access to jobs and opportunities,” said Acting Administrator K. Jane Williams.

Most of the grants are for either $2.29 million or $1.5 million. Recipients of the higher amount include the Chicago Transit Authority, for the purchase of electric buses and chargers with on-route charging capabilities; the Transit Authority of Lexington (LexTran), KY, for the purchase of zero-emission battery-electric buses and a partnership with a nonprofit research organization to assess the operational and cost benefits; Tompkins County, NY, funds for Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit in Ithaca to purchase electric buses; Laketran in Painesville, OH, for the purchase of electric buses and charging systems to help replace buses that have surpassed their useful lives; Portland’s Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon, for the purchase of battery-electric buses and charging equipment; and Hampton Roads Transit, Hampton, VA, for electric buses and chargers, along with retrofits to the agency’s maintenance facility.
