New Tunneling Process

Sound Transit in Seattle recently completed excavation—five months ahead of schedule—of a tunnel that will connect two East Link light rail stations, East Main and Downtown Bellevue, when the line opens in 2023. The contractor used a process called the sequential excavation method for the 15-month project; this method employs conventional equipment including track-mounted excavators and cutting equipment to remove soil in small sections and support excavated areas with spray-applied concrete. Sound Transit Board Member Claudia Balducci called the completion “a breakthrough in every sense of the word … the culmination of over a decade of vision, hard work and tenacity by local and regional leaders, planners, workers and many, many members of the public.”
