Dayton Bus Operator Goes Above and Beyond

The Greater Dayton (OH) Regional Transit Authority (RTA) recently honored bus operator Keisha Gay with its “Be The One” Award for her efforts helping return four lost children home.

The award recognizes employees who embody the agency’s core values—safety, integrity, quality service, respect, stewardship and our people—in their day-to-day work ethic.

Gay was driving an RTA route around 10:30 p.m. when she was flagged down by four children, all under the age of 12. After she pulled over, the children boarded and told her they had been wandering the streets for several hours trying to find their way home. She contacted her supervisors, who called Dayton police, and drove the children to a site where supervisors and police met them.

Roland Caldwell, RTA director of operations, said, “Safety for our customers, employees and the communities we serve is one of our priorities. [Gay] noticed the children were out alone late at night and was immediately concerned for their safety. She was committed to making sure the children made it home safely.”
