'50x50' Promotes Cutting U.S. Energy Consumption

The Alliance to Save Energy released a report Sept. 26 in conjunction with the launch of its “50x50” campaign to cut U.S. transportation energy use by 50 percent by 2050 while also improving mobility.

APTA President and CEO Paul P. Skoutelas, a member of the 50x50 Commission on U.S. Transportation Sector Efficiency, said, “With transportation responsible for 30 percent of energy consumption in the United States, the 50x50 Commission’s recommendations serve as a route map to guide this transformation of the transportation sector. Increased public transportation is pivotal to meeting the goal of reducing our energy use by 2050, and we look forward to working with policymakers at every level of government to turn these recommendations into action.”

The commission issued consensus recommendations calling on policymakers to act urgently in a coordinated manner to lead a successful energy efficiency transformation of the transportation sector. It notes “a confluence of new technologies, business models and other innovations” including more efficient vehicle types, powered by electricity, renewable natural gas and hybrid engines; advanced vehicle technologies; increased automation; and information and communications technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence.

“This technological revolution allows us to reinvent mobility for a smarter, more integrated system,” the report states. “It is also creating an urgent need to address energy consumption in the transportation sector, as these technologies could move energy use dramatically up or down depending on how the transformation unfolds.”

The full text of the report and associated materials are available here.

The commission members include executives and decision makers from the stakeholder groups that hold the keys to unlocking the power of improved energy efficiency across the entire U.S. transportation sector, with support from a steering committee and staff of the Alliance to Save Energy.
