Spokane Opens New Transit Center

The Spokane (WA) Transit Authority (STA) marked the implementation of region-wide service improvements with a ribbon-cutting event in late September at the West Plains Transit Center site, which also includes a 200-space park-and-ride lot.

“This new transit center will make riding the bus much more convenient for West Plains customers and support the strong business growth happening in the area,” said STA Chief Executive Officer E. Susan Meyer. “Reducing travel times and making transit more accessible creates benefits across the board—for residents, for employers and employees and even for others on the road who don’t use transit."

STA designed the new facility to decrease transit trip times, better serve existing businesses in the region and provide parking to area residents wishing to use public transit for a portion of their daily commutes. Additional features at the parking area include electric charging stations for up to four personal vehicles; short-term waiting for transportation network companies, to help with first- and last-mile solutions; and such passenger amenities as heated shelters and real-time information signage.

These service improvements are the third round implemented by the agency since voters approved funding for the 10-year STA Moving Forward plan in 2016. They include revised, extended and simplified bus routes, additional night and weekend service and larger buses on some routes.
