New CEOs Named

Distler, Akron METRO

METRO Regional Transit Authority in Akron, OH, has named Dawn Distler, most recently director of transit at Knoxville (TN) Area Transit (KAT), as its executive director.

Distler began her public transit career with METRO as a bus operator. During her tenure with KAT, the agency received both the 2017 APTA Outstanding System of the Year Award and the 2018 APTA Gold Award for Safety and Security.

For APTA, she is an at-large director on the APTA Board of Directors and a member of the BRT Committee, Bus & Paratransit CEOs Committee, Bus Operations Committee, Diversity and Inclusion Council, LGBT Task Force and Mid-Size Operations Committee.

Abrams, SFRTA/Tri-Rail

The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) in Pompano Beach, operator of Tri-Rail commuter rail, has named Palm Beach County Commissioner Steven L. Abrams its next executive director, succeeding the retiring Jack Stephens.

Abrams, a member of the APTA Transit Board Members Committee, served on the SFRTA Governing Board beginning in 2010, as its chair in 2012-2014 and 2017-2018.

Abrams has become known as the “Commuting Commissioner” because he was the first board member to also be a regular commuter on Tri-Rail. He has served on the Palm Beach County Board of Commissioners representing District 4 since 2009 and is termed out of office this November. He earlier served three terms as mayor of Boca Raton and five terms as a Boca Raton City Council member.

Bauer, ARTBA

The American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) has named Dave Bauer its president and chief executive officer, effective Jan. 1, 2019. He succeeds Pete Ruane, who retired Oct. 31 after 30 years of service as the longest-tenured head of the 116-year-old organization.

Bauer joined ARTBA in 1997 and currently serves as its executive vice president of advocacy. Earlier he spent seven years on the personal staff of former Sen. Mark O. Hatfield (R-OR).

Longtime ARTBA Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer William D. Toohey Jr. was appointed interim president and CEO by the board and will assist in the transition process.
