Texas Transportation Institute's Report Reinforces Value of Public Transit

The Texas Transportation Institute released its latest Urban Mobility Report on Sept. 27. It analyzes the future of commuting and finds that there continues to be a large uptick in the amount of time that drivers spend stuck in traffic. It calculates commuters will add another three hours of sitting on congested roadways in 2015 and an additional seven hours by 2020 at the current pace. Public transportation saved more than 796 million hours of delay on roads.

“This report clearly shows as our economy rebounds, expanding public transportation use is key to reducing traffic congestion,” said American Public Transportation Association President William Millar. “Even if you don’t ride public transportation, there are clear benefits in supporting expansion of public transit options. Better public transportation in your community means less congestion on the roads.”

US Postal Service Continues to Encourage Public Transportation

The US Postal Service released its latest sustainability report Sept. 29 and highlighted public transportation. The report also spotlighted the Go Green Forever stamps. APTA took part in the release of the stamp series featuring public transportation, issued by the US Postal Service last spring.

Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) is one step closer to streetcars in Providence, RI. RIPTA along with Providence city staff presented a plan that could create a two-mile system through the city center connecting major attractions and the city hospital to quick, efficient streetcar transit.

MA Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray is riding the rails! He will be joining Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Acting General Manager Jonathan Davis to promote Walk/Ride Day today. They will take the commuter rail from Worcester to Boston’s South Station where they will congratulate riders for taking public transportation.

Public transportation has always had a hand in pop culture and riders in London can sport Oyster card rings and watch widgets that allow them have their Oi Oyster cards at the ready.
