Department of Housing and Urban Development Announces Nearly $96 Million in Sustainable Community Grants

Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Shaun Donovan announced that nearly $96 million would be distributed through 2011 Sustainable Communities Grants. HUD will provide funds to 27 communities and organizations for Community Challenge grants and 29 regional areas will receive Regional Planning grants.

Report Reveals Public Transit Riders Save $9,797 Annually Over Commuting

American highways always feel the strain of holiday travel in both hours and dollars. However, the November Transit Savings Report released by APTA shows that money and time can be saved daily if people take public transit. A two-person household can save $9,797 a year on average and $816 dollars a month by giving up one car. The city where the savings are most stark is New York where commuters can save $14,458 a year and $1,205 a month by switching to public transit.

APTA’s Transit CEO’s Seminar is coming up Jan 28-31, 2012 in Orlando, FL. Early registration ends just over a month from now on Dec. 28. Industry trends and leadership skills are only a few of the topics for the seminar.

The Super Committee failed to meet its deadline to address the issue of reducing spending and increasing revenue that would have prevented across the board cuts to military and domestic spending. DOT Secretary Ray LaHood warned that this could have a serious impact on America’s infrastructure.

While New York residents are looking forward to a new Tappan Zee Bridge, they are also speaking out on the need to specifically address public transit options for the bridge. They are concerned that current plans relegate public transit to being fit into the structure after the bridges are built as opposed to the bridges being built with them in mind.
