President’s Budget Fully Funds MAP-21

The Fiscal Year 2014 budget released April 10 by President Obama fully funds the authorized funding levels provided in MAP-21 and reserves funding after that legislation expires on Sept. 30, 2014, for a long-term reauthorization of surface transportation programs, including a 25 percent increase from current levels. APTA leaders called these proposals commendable for their “continued support for public transportation investment.” The budget also proposes an additional $9 billion for critical transit infrastructure improvements, including $6 billion for Transit State of Good Repair, $500 million for New Start core capacity projects, and $2.5 billion for Urban and Rural Transit programs. This is in addition to a continued commitment to high-speed and intercity passenger rail, and a focus on livable communities.

As part of DOT Secretary Ray LaHood's initiative to increase opportunities for women in transportation, the department is posting videos on its YouTube channel that offer first-person testimony from women already working in the industry. For example, one video features Beverly Swaim-Staley, president and CEO of the Union Station Redevelopment Corporation in Washington, DC.

A bus in Chapel Hill, NC, is displaying a decorative image on its exterior as part of a city-wide art exhibition. The Mobile Mural design may seem random, but it isn't.

Was the Toronto Transit Commission actually inviting passengers to ride solo on "personal" subway cars the morning of April 1? Better check that date again.
