Secretary Foxx Sworn In

Anthony Foxx was sworn into office as the nation's 17th secretary of transportation in a private ceremony on Tuesday, July 2. Foxx was unanimously confirmed by the Senate on June 27.

Newest APTA Transit Savings Report Finds Big Savings for Public Transit Users

Individuals who ride public transportation instead of driving can save, on average, more than $800 this month and $9,500 annually, according to APTA's newest Transit Savings Report. These savings are based on the cost of commuting by public transportation compared with the cost of owning and driving a vehicle. That cost includes the June 26, 2013, average national gas price and the national unreserved monthly parking rate.

"Recent studies suggest that Americans are buying fewer cars, driving less, and getting fewer licenses as each year goes by," according to the New York Times. The Times' article suggests we may be seeing "The End of Car Culture."

Washington, D.C., riders give high marks to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, according to a poll conducted for the Washington Post. The Post reports that "73 percent of respondents gave Metro positive ratings for reliability, similar to the 75 percent in 2010."

Los Angeles Union Station, New York's Grand Central Terminal, and Boston's South Station are among the grandest, busiest train stations in the United States, according to Governing magazine. The article lists 10 stations that stand out.
