APTA Transit Savings Report Finds Big Savings for Public Transit Users

Gas prices have increased by 11 cents since last month, making public transportation a better option than ever, according to APTA's latest Transit Savings Report, released today. Individuals who ride public transportation instead of driving cars can save, on average, more than $848 this month, and $10,181 annually.

"In the past decade, urban America has fallen in love with public transportation, with nearly universal ridership increases on buses, light rail and other forms of shared transit," according to Atlantic Cities. This fact is evidenced by the growing trend in ridership that saw more than 10 billion passenger trips in 2012 and record-breaking numbers on many public transit systems, despite the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy.

A 15-mile, $192 million rapid-transit bus system connecting San Bernardino to Loma Linda in California may soon be completed, with service beginning in 2014. Some system testing will begin in September and October of this year.

Amtrak will permit bicycles to be brought aboard specifically designated cars on the Ethan Allen line running from Vermont to New York, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) announced on July 16. Amtrak already has a 'Bring Your Bicycle On Board' program on several other lines, including Boston-Portland, New York-Charlotte, and California.
