DOT Secretary Anthony Foxx to Speak at APTA Annual Meeting


Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx will be the featured speaker at a
special session during APTA's Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL. At an APTA session on Sept. 30, he will share with members his priorities for the department and vision for the future of the public transportation industry.

Continuing Resolution is Delayed


The House
delayed a Sept. 12 vote on a continuing resolution, which would extend funding for all federal programs, including public transportation programs. The government will need new funding on Oct. 1 to prevent a shutdown, as the appropriations for the current fiscal year ends on Sept. 30.


APTA's Transit Savings Report Finds Big Savings for Riders


Riding public transportation saves individuals $10,122 a year, according to
APTA's latest Transit Savings Report. Individuals who ride public transportation can save, on average, more than $844 this month.

APTA's
Annual Meeting in Chicago, IL, is swiftly approaching. The Chicago Transportation Authority, the Metropolitan Rail Corporation and Amtrak have arranged informative technical tours for registrants during the afternoon of Tuesday, Oct. 1.

DOT will
dispense $474 million in grants to 52 transportation projects in 37 states. With matching private, local and state funds, the 2013 grants will fund a total of $1.8 billion in projects.

The Rapid in Grand Rapids, MI, was named the 'Outstanding Mid-Size Transportation System' in North America for 2013 by APTA. It was the second time in nine years The Rapid has received the award.

Living near good public transit makes people happier, according to a new study. A University of Minnesota scholar found that individuals in close proximity to light rail in Minneapolis reported greater life satisfaction than those without access to the bus line.
