APTA Nominating Committee Selects 2014-2015 Slate

APTA's 2014 Nominating Committee selected current Vice Chair Phillip A. Washington, general manager, Regional Transportation District, Denver, CO, as APTA chair for 2014-2015, at a meeting on Aug. 14. Valarie McCall, board member, Greater Cleveland Regional Transportation Authority, was nominated vice chair, and Doran J. Barnes, executive director, Foothill Transit, West Covina, CA, will continue his three-year term as secretary-treasurer. The committee also nominated members-at-large for both the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors. The election will take place on Oct. 11 at APTA's Annual Meeting & EXPO in Houston, TX. The committee is chaired by Flora Castillo, immediate past APTA Chair and board member, New Jersey Transit Corporation. For the full list of selected nominees, click here.

Pelosi Calls for Infrastructure Spending

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) made the case for investment in infrastructure at a press conference in San Francisco on Aug. 12. Pelosi cited San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency's (SFMTA) Central Subway project as a model for infrastructure projects which boost the economy and create middle-class jobs. Also in attendance were Ed Reiskin, director, SFMTA, and San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee.

Public Transit Riders Save Big Through Summer

APTA's August Transit Savings Report found that individuals who ride public transit instead of driving cars can save, on average, more than $839 this month and $10,064 annually. These savings are based on the cost of commuting by public transportation compared to the cost of owning and driving a vehicle, and includes the Aug. 12, 2014 average national gas price.
