Congressional Hearings Focus on Public Transportation Funding
Two Congressional hearings this week focused on the need for investment in surface transportation. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK), Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, and Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), the committee's Ranking Member, both argued against devolution of the federal transportation program and called for greater leadership on the issue, on Feb. 25.

DOT Secretary Anthony Foxx testified before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development on Feb. 26 on the need for growth in federal public transportation programs. Subcommittee members questioned Foxx on a wide variety of matters including Highway Trust Fund revenues, safety issues, positive train control, and the need for federal investment in public transportation.

Nearly 300 Members of Congress Sign Letter Urging Highway Trust Fund Solution

Nearly 300 members of the House from both parties signed a letter calling for a long-term surface transportation bill that transcends short-term fixes to the Highway Trust Fund. "We are united in our conviction that now is the time to end the cycle of short-term extensions that kick the can down the road by doing the work needed to pass a multi-year surface transportation reauthorization bill," reads the letter, which was released Feb. 24. Reps. Reid Ribble (R-WI), Tom Reed (R-NY), Dan Lipinski (D-IL) and Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ) co-authored the letter.

February Brings Big Transit Savings

Individuals who ride public transportation instead of driving can save, on average, more than $770 per month and $9,238 annually, according to APTA's February Transit Savings Report. These savings are based on the cost of commuting by public transit compared to the cost of driving a vehicle, which includes the Feb. 23 average national gas price.
