FTA: Utah Is Third State to Achieve SSO Certification
FTA announced that Utah has become the third state to obtain federal certification of its rail transit State Safety Oversight (SSO) program, following Ohio and Minnesota. A total of 30 states with rail transit systems must obtain certification of their SSO programs by the April 15, 2019, deadline; if a state fails to meet the deadline, FTA is prohibited by law from awarding any new federal funds to public transportation agencies within the state until certification is achieved. TTC's Byford New NYC Transit President

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority has named Andy Byford president of MTA New York City Transit. Byford has headed the Toronto Transit Commission for the past five years, part of a career covering almost three decades with tenures in London and Sydney. He succeeds Veronique (Ronnie) Hakim, who is now MTA managing director.

For APTA, Byford is a member of the Board of Directors, Rail Transit CEOs Subcommittee and Rail Transit Committee.

APTA's Hanson Participates in Homeland Security Roundtable

Polly Hanson, APTA director of security, risk and emergency management, participated in a recent Capitol Hill roundtable on threats and technology development, joining other representatives of the surface transportation sector. The discussion was hosted by the House Committee on Homeland Security. Hanson urged the committee to increase funding for the Transit Security Grant Program and continue support for emerging and cutting-edge technology research and pilot programs.

Register by Dec. 7 for APTA's Call Center Challenge

APTA invites call center personnel at member public transportation agencies to compete in the 11th annual Call Center Challenge. Supervisors must complete the online application by Dec. 7. Judges will select five finalists from the preliminary round for the final competition, which will be held Feb. 27 in San Francisco during the 2018 APTA Marketing and Communications Workshop. Public Transit Users Can Save $826 a Month Over Driving

APTA's November Transit Savings Report shows that people who use public transit and live with one less car in a two-person household could save an average of $826 a month or $9,913 a year. Click here to see the savings in the top 20 cities with the highest public transit ridership.

Coffee Powers London Buses
—Transport for London is preparing to fuel some of its buses with a biofuel created by blending oil extracted from coffee waste. Other city buses already operate with biofuel using waste products such as cooking oil and tallow from meat processing. See the BBC report.
