APTA has released an analysis of the U.S. Supreme Court’s June 27, 2018, decision on Janus v. American Fed’n of State, County and Mun. Emps., Council 31 (“Janus”), which holds that public sector employees who choose not to join a union cannot be compelled to pay any form of union dues as a condition of employment.

The APTA analysis provides assistance to public transit authorities that must respond to the decision, both its express holding and the implications that flow from that holding. Issues include understanding the scope of the decision; determining whether the agency is withholding dues and why; revoking prior voluntary authorizations by employees; the impact of Janus on the contract as a whole; and publicizing Janus to unit employees.

Public Transit Users Can Save $841 a Month Over Driving
