More than 150 attended ARVO-India ICA meeting

The 24th annual meeting of ARVO-India (Indian Eye Research Group) was held July 29 - 30, at the Aravind Medical Research Foundation in Madurai, India. Over 150 delegates representing different eye research organizations across the country attended this meeting along with a few international attendees. ARVO-India supported 15 members-in-training (MIT) to travel to this meeting.

The two-day event included 103 presentations. Major highlights included

  • The "Dr. Bireswar Chakrabarti Oration" was delivered by Debasish Sinha of the Wilmer Eye Institute, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Md.
  • The "Dr. D. Balasubramanian Oration" was delivered by G. Kumaramanickavel of the Narayana Nethralaya (specialty eye hospital) in Bangalore, India.
  • 15 special talks were presented by experts from various fields of eye research.
  • 17 free papers and 69 posters were presented, largely by young researchers.
  • A special breakout session on "Recent Advances" in the area of microbiology and immunology, genomics and proteomics, cell and molecular biology, biochemistry and pharmacology and clinician researcher interface was featured. This was an interactive session where eye researchers presented on the recent advances and future path for India.
  • Six MITs received special recognition awards for platform presentations and posters

The meeting concluded with a consensus that all the eye research centers need to extend collaborative efforts in furthering translational eye and vision research in India.
