Judith Daar Wins Jay Healey Teaching Award

On June 5th, the American Society of Law, Medicine and Ethics presented its Jay Healey Award to Judith Daar, Professor of Law at Whittier Law School. The award was announced by Daar’s longtime friend and last year’s recipient, Professor Diane Hoffmann. The award presentation highlighted Daar’s numerous professional achievements, and one of the most memorable moments of the evening was when Daar’s husband Eric made a surprise appearance.

Judith Daar is a Professor of Law at Whittier Law School, where she served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from 2008 to 2012. She also holds appointment as a Clinical Professor at the UCI School of Medicine. Since 2002, Professor Daar has been a member of Medical Ethics Committee at UCI Medical Center. In November 2014, Professor Daar was appointed Chair of the Ethics Committee of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, where she has served as a member since 2008. She is currently the co-chair of the ABA Section on Real Property, Trust and Estate Law, Bioethics Committee. In 2012, Professor Daar was elected to the American Law Institute. Daar is also one of only two people two ever hold the Presidency of ASLME for two consecutive terms.

For more than 20 years, the Health Law Professors conference has honored the memory of Jay Healey, a beloved teacher of health law at the University of Connecticut Schools of Law and Medicine. Nominations for the award were submitted to ASLME in the spring, and Professor Daar was selected as the winner by a committee made up of the past 10 Jay Healey Award recipients.
