What Makes Health Law Professors Conference so Special?

Right about now, ASLME (and its HLP co-sponsor) start to see proposals being submitted for the upcoming Health Law Professors Conference.  I start to get excited! Don’t cue the eye roll yet. It might be hard to believe that an academic conference can inspire me to work hard every year, but I truly have so much enthusiasm for this particular conference. There is a lot to like about the Health Law Professors Conference, but here are a few reasons why I think the conference is very special:

It’s Our Baby – And Yours

The Annual Health Law Professors Conference is held every year. We have schools lining up to host. This year is the 40th Annual! Many of the professionals that founded this conference still attend year after year! ASLME is proud that our conference, “our baby”, has grown and morphed into a conference that attendees feel like is “theirs”. I am not talking about ownership but rather a sense of belonging. To those that teach health law this is “your” conference.

Never the “Same Old” Conference

This conference moves around. Every year it is hosted by a different school in a different city. Traveling to a new city every year is never boring! This year’s Health Law Professors Conference will take place June 8-10, 2017 at Georgia State University College of Law in Atlanta, GA. Lately, attendees have been treated to an annual showcase of new law school buildings. GSU will continue the trend as they will proudly show off their brand new law school and modern meeting facilities.  Ooh…shiny!

Friday Night Friendly Competition

I enjoy reminiscing about the past Health Law Professors Conferences.  I have helped plan 15 (going on 16) of them - so I have lots of fond memories! When talking about the past conferences, most of the time the conversation focuses on the past Friday night receptions. There have been some fabulous events that have taken place in awe-inspiring famous locations. Remember when Widener brought us all out to the DuPont mansion “Winterthur”, or Case Western’s  Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame night, or when Seton Hall took everyone on a boat around the Statue of Liberty and then rented out ALL of Ellis Island?! Oh and remember the fun we had at the City Museum in St. Louis playing on the slides and Ferris wheel. Last year we had a beautiful night at the Boston Tea Party Museum.  There have been so many creative, fun, lively receptions in the past. The Friday night reception has turned into a must-attend event every year!

It’s the People!

After years of working on the Health Law Professors Conference I have gotten to know so many professionals that have become my friends. There is something special about seeing old friends and making new ones. The Health Law Professors Conference is not just a bunch of concurrent sessions (although there will be a bunch). It is a community that has been built over 40 years. 40 years of health law professionals coming together to teach each other and to include each other in a special club.Whether this will be your 40th conference or your first, I hope that you feel welcomed. At the end of the conference, we hope that you too feel like the conference is “yours” when you leave.

Registration is now open for the 40th Annual Health Law Professors Conference, and we hope to see you in Atlanta!
