June Truck Tonnage Rises 5.9% to Record

Truck tonnage rose 5.9% in June from the same month last year to a record high, American Trucking Associations said. The index's 125.9 reading edged May's 125.8, which had been a record. ATA uses the year 2000 as a 100-reading baseline. June's 0.1% month-to-month upturn followed May's 2.1% gain over April, which was slightly below the 2.3% first reported. May's reading was originally reported as 126. The not seasonally adjusted index, which represents tonnage actually hauled by fleets, slipped 5% from May. Year to date, tonnage is up 4.7% over the same six-month period last year, ATA said Tuesday in its monthly seasonally adjusted for-hire truck tonnage report.

Although commercial vehicle orders slipped month over month in June, there was still good news to be had. Classes 5-7 net orders also retreated, totaling just under 15,500 units.

Congressman Ribble Visits JX Peterbilt Truck Dealership

ATD Vice Chairman Eric Jorgensen (right) meets with U.S. Rep. Reid Ribble (R-Wisc.) during a tour of JX Enterprises truck dealership in Green Bay, Wisc.

Last week, U.S. Rep. Reid Ribble (R-Wisc.) visited JX Peterbilt in Green Bay, Wisc. He was hosted by JX Enterprises President/CEO and ATD Vice Chairman Eric Jorgensen. Rep. Ribble is currently in his 2nd term in Congress and serves on the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee. Prior to entering Congress, Rep. Ribble was a successful roofing contractor. A highlight of the visit was the opportunity for Jorgensen to take Congressman Ribble on a brief drive around Green Bay in a new 2013 Peterbilt truck. Jorgensen also briefed him on the long family history of JX Enterprises, which was started by his father, Chuck Jorgensen, and has since grown into 16 full-service truck dealerships and support services in four states. Some of the federal issues highlighted during the visit included the federal excise tax on heavy-duty trucks, new truck emissions regulations, comprehensive tax reform and increased interest in natural gas among JX Enterprises customers. House Panel Looks for Highway Trust Fund Fix

At a hearing on the Highway Trust Fund Tuesday it was clear that the key House transportation committee has some distance to go before it can achieve consensus on how the fund could be made whole, or even if it should be preserved. The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee invited Polly Trottenberg, under secretary for policy at the Department of Transportation, and Kim Cawley, chief of the natural and physical resources cost estimates unit at the Congressional Budget Office, to explain the status and outlook for the fund, which is used to pay for the nation's road and bridge building and repair efforts. Their message, in short, was that the fund, which is fed by federal taxes on highway users, has been a principal source of revenue for U.S. roads and bridges for 57 years.
