February Class 8 Orders Rise 28%, Hit Highest Volume in 14 Months

North American Class 8 orders in February hit a 14-month high as volumes cleared 23,000 and exceeded expectations, analysts said. Orders were 23,200, up 28% from 18,078 a year earlier, ACT Research Co. reported, citing preliminary data it would revise mid-month. At the previous high point, in December 2015, orders hit 28,150.

US Retail Sales of Class 8 Trucks Drop in February

U.S. retail sales of Class 8 trucks in February fell 29.5% from a year earlier, as all truck makers posted double-digit declines, WardsAuto.com reported. Sales hit 11,200, compared with 15,876 in the 2016 period. The last time sales rose year-over-year was in November 2015. However, February improved on January’s total, which experts viewed as marking the bottom of the market.

Used Truck Values Were Soft in January

The market for used trucks sagged in January, according to Price Digests, a trucking information services company. Price Digests’ Price Stability Index, a measure of used truck values and the strength of the resale market, dipped to 95.8 in January from 99.5 in December. A measure of 99 to 100 represents a stable market.

Volvo Trucks and Partners for Advanced Transportation Technology (PATH) at the University of California, Berkeley recently completed a successful demonstration of partially automated truck platooning, made possible by Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control technology (CACC).

Plotting the Path from Diesel to Electric Trucks

Alternative fuels and propulsion systems offer a compelling array of environmentally friendly powertrain options to consider, but it’s still too soon to write off diesel as trucking’s juice of choice. Rather, according to Daimler Truck North America’s Wilfried Achenbach, fleets will keep benefiting from increasingly more fuel-efficient diesel trucks as the path to deploying far greener electric-drive trucks in North America is worked out in the years ahead.
