How You Can Help – Now!

  • AWC is seeking comments from cities along shorelines on SB 6508, which authorizes creation of Beach Management Districts by counties to help manage and clean up beaches. For more information, please see the Environment & Water section of this Bulletin.
  • AWC is seeking comments from cities on SB 6229, which directs the Department of Ecology (DOE) to prepare a plan to guide state programs that provide technical and financial assistance to local governments. For more information, please see the Environment & Water section of this Bulletin.

What’s Ahead

  1. Annexation – AWC Priority: SB 6238, which standardizes the property owner petition-method form of annexation between code and non-code cities, is scheduled for hearing on Tuesday, January 22 at 1:30 p.m. in the Government Operations and Elections Committee. For more information, see the Land Use & Housing section of this Bulletin.
  2. Governor's Climate Change Legislation – AWC Priority: The Governor has requested major climate change legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create clean energy jobs.SB 6516/HB 2815 will be heard in the Senate Water Energy and Telecommunications Committee on Tuesday, January 22 at 10 am and in the House Ecology and Parks Committee on Wednesday, January 23, at 3:30 pm.   3. Gang Task Force Recommendations – AWC Priority: HB 2712, which includes the task force recommendations to provide tools and funding for addressing gang suppression, prevention and intervention, will be heard in the House Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Committee on Monday, January 21, at 1:30 pm.
  4. Streamlined Sales Tax Issues for 2008: On Tuesday, January 22, at 3:30 pm the Senate Ways & Means Committee will hold a work session on the progress of the streamlined sales tax agreement, the mitigation advisory committee, and the Governor’s decision to stay the course in response to a national agreement amendment. AWC will be a member of the panel along with representatives the Department of Revenue and business. For more information, please see the Municipal Finance section of this Bulletin.
