AWI Board Sets Sights on Five Futures for AWI

During several days of innovative strategic planning sessions that concluded on September 20, the AWI Board of Directors affirmed the association’s primary and secondary market customers and allied industry associations, and devised a list of preferred futures for the next six years. The five preferred futures state that by 2013 AWI:

  • Has a certification program that is universally respected and utilized by specifiers and owners and avoids AWI liability and conflict of interest (2007-2010).
  • Has developed a single, measurable North American quality standard that applies to all projects and supports certification (2007-2010).
  • Has created an owner and/or employee career development program with skills measurement and credentialing (2010-2013).
  • Has identified new sources of employees and marketed the industry to them (2007-2010).
  • Has created new opportunities for member involvement that produce high value to the participant and significant contributions to the association (2007-2010).

Watch for reports about the new and existing AWI programs, publications and products that will flow from these five futures.  It’s an exciting time for AWI growth and service to members.

New AWI Officers Elected for 2006-2007

AWI is pleased to announce the association’s officers for the 2006-2007 year who were elected unanimously by the AWI Board of Directors on September 19, 2006.  On October 1, 2006, Ed Brewer of Louisville Lumber & Millwork takes the reigns as AWI President. AWI Officers for 2006-2007 are:

Philip Duvic Appointed as AWI Executive VP

AWI’s Board of Directors unanimously approved the appointment of industry veteran and former AWI Director of Marketing & Communications Philip Duvic as Executive Vice President of AWI effective September 19, 2006.  

Phil has led AWI’s successful marketing and communications efforts since 2000 when he joined the AWI team to expand AWI’s marketing efforts and manage its publications working as liaison to the AWI Marketing & Membership Committee. As the new chief staff executive of AWI, Phil is also an AWI Past President (1998-1999) and former member of the association’s Board of Directors. He is a 25-year veteran of the architectural woodwork industry. The announcement of Phil’s promotion was made by 2005-2006 AWI President Rick Kogler following a strategic planning session of the AWI Board of Directors on September 19.

The Board’s unanimous approval about the appointment followed a comprehensive national search for a successor to Judy Durham, former AWI Executive VP, that began with scrupulous review of resumes from 28 applicants across the country.  The four board member AWI Search Committee included AWI Past President (1995-1996) Board Delegate Craig Johnson, President Rick Kogler, President-Elect Ed Brewer, and Vice President Richard Ungerbuehler, Sr.

IRS Gives Gulf Coast Businesses Another Filing Break

As part of the continuing effort to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina, the IRS will grant to businesses in the Gulf Coast an additional postponement of filing and payment requirements. The deadline will be Oct. 16, 2006, which is the same deadline established earlier for certain individual income tax return filers.

The postponement applies to taxpayers located in the designated disaster areas.  Business taxpayers in seven Louisiana parishes and three Mississippi counties will automatically qualify for this postponement. In addition, taxpayers in other locations – covering 11 Alabama counties, 31 Louisiana parishes and 48 Mississippi counties – can also obtain the filing and payment postponements by self-identifying themselves to the IRS. Prompt Pay to Speed Up in New Jersey

On September 1, New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine (D) signed SB 1726, a bill that requires construction owners to pay their contractors within 30 days of billing for "work performed in accordance with the provisions of a contract and certified by the owner or the owner's authorized approving agent" on contracts signed on or after September 1. If an owner does not make payment within the 30-day time frame, the legislation holds the owner to be liable for the remaining balance plus interest at a rate equal to the prime rate plus one percent,” the American Subcontractors Association (ASA) reported.

The new law is expected to speed the payments to subcontractors within 10 days of receipt of payment by an owner.  “The new law also allows prime contractors, subcontractors and sub-subcontractors to suspend work for nonpayment after seven calendar days' notice after payment is due,” ASA reported.
