Legislative News

Tax Relief Legislation Passed by 109th Congress

It was touch and go on tax measures just before the 109th Congress adjourned at the end of 2006.  Both houses of Congress, however, passed legislation that extended several tax relief provisions which expired at the end of 2005 and added several new ones. The Tax Relief and Health Care Act of 2006 (HR 6111) was signed into law by President Bush on December 20, 2006.

According to the American Subcontractors Association (ASA), HR 6111 includes provisions that would:

  • modify and extend the Work Opportunity Tax Credit and Welfare-to-Work Tax Credit;
  • allow greater contributions to, and increase flexibility for rollovers into, health savings accounts;
  • extend the deduction for energy-efficient commercial buildings by one year; and
  • extend certain income tax credits and deductions.

For more information about the effects of the changes on your bottom line, consult your tax advisor.

In the Chapters

Power Training Session Planned for Chapter Leaders

AWI’s Spring Leadership Conference, April 11-12, 2007 in Minneapolis, MN, will attract many AWI chapters that use this forum as a key component of their leadership development and strategic planning.  Plan now to participate in the Chapter Leadership Training session on April 12, 2007.

AWI Chapters are vital to the association’s goal of promoting quality architectural woodwork and growing the architectural woodwork industry.  Chapters are a local force in the architectural woodwork community and for many AWI members chapters are the only “face” of the association.

Attendees of the Chapter Leadership Training day, will:

  • learn the “nuts and bolts’ of running a chapter,
  • gain ideas on making your chapter more valuable to members,
  • get tips on improving member involvement, and
  • network with other chapter leaders from across the country.

AWI Chapters – don’t JUST send your current officers.  Use this leadership training forum to encourage and train future leaders for your chapter! Watch for more news and registration information as it becomes available.  Save the date!

Catalog Promotes Contract Bidding and Negotiation Strategies for Subcontractors

Specialty trade contractors have new training options to help them overcome business obstacles such as slow progress payments, excessive back charges, and onerous subcontract agreements.

The American Subcontractors Association's (ASA) 2006-07 Distance-Learning Catalog (Late Fall Edition), available in PDF format at www.asaonline.com, describes three methods by which owners of specialty trade contracting firms, as well as executives, project managers, estimators, risk managers, and other employees, can learn critical management strategies while minimizing travel time and costs. ASA's catalog offers live web-based seminars and audio teleconferences, as well as recorded multimedia CD-ROMs – all designed specifically to meet the needs of today's competitive specialty trade contractors.

The resources in ASA's catalog also can be ordered directly online at www.asaonline.com and www.contractorsknowledgenetwork.org.
