Basketballs, Golf Clubs and Business Success

Can you throw a basketball up in the air and catch it on the way down? Most of us can.

Can you throw five basketballs in the air at once, and catch ALL of them on the way down? Probably not.  Emotion, creativity, logic, hope, and information all crowd in on us. It is like juggling too many balls at once.

Would you play a full round of golf with just your 9-iron? Of course not. It is not possible to design a golf club that is best for driving and at the same time the best for putting.

That's why the "Six Hats" method of thinking is essential for business success. Members of the AWI Development Council will join current and future AWI chapter leaders in wearing all “Six Thinking Hats” as they invent the future of their businesses and AWI. Each "hat" represents a parallel line of thoughtful discussion. The goal is an effective plan, decision or solution.

Safety Matters

AWI/CNA Safety Award Program Closing Soon; Submissions Needed by April 1

AWI and its insurance safety partner, CNA, will recognize AWI Manufacturing Members again this year for their safe work environments. To qualify, simply submit your data at the safety Web site. Receive industry-wide recognition for a safe shop and boost the morale of your employees. All it takes is a few minutes, but the recognition lasts a lifetime.

Visit the safety Web site for eligibility criteria and submission details. To level the playing field, awards are presented in three categories, broken down by shop size. Awards will be presented at the 55th annual AWI convention in Louisville, KY, Oct. 4-6, 2007. Submissions must be received by April 1, 2007.

OSHA Alerts 14,000 Employers about High Injury and Illness Rates

Approximately 14,000 employers recently received a letter from Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Edwin G. Foulke, Jr. alerting them of their high injury and illness rates and encouraging them to use free OSHA resources to improve their safety and health performance. The notifications were based on data reported by approximately 80,000 employers surveyed by OSHA last year (the survey collected injury and illness data from calendar year 2005). Foulke said the notification process "is meant to raise awareness that injuries and illnesses are high at these facilities."

A few slots are still open for AWI Manufacturing Member projects to be published in the summer issue of Design Solutions. AIA Introduces AIA Documents on Demand eShop

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Documents on Demand eShop is a Web site that provides customers 24/7 access to the most popular AIA Contract Documents. The eShop allows customers to purchase individual documents and then print them immediately.

At the eShop, customers will be asked to provide limited project-specific information. They will then be able to print the documents and complete them as they would any paper document purchased from an AIA document distributor. The only tools needed are an Internet Browser (the AIA Web site supports Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox) and a printer. Mac users may access the documents using a current version of Mozilla Firefox.

Legislative News

Anti-Indemnity Reform Bill Awaits Governor’s Signature in Colorado

After consecutive vetoes in the prior two years by former Governor Bill Owens (R), potent anti-indemnity legislation spearheaded by ASA of Colorado is set to become law.  S.B. 87 is on its way to the desk of Governor Bill Ritter (D), who has pledged to sign the measure, according to the American Subcontractors Association (ASA).

The legislation, which had been approved by the Colorado Senate, was passed by the state’s House of Representatives on March 12.  ASA reports that “If signed, the law would prevent transfer of liability through contracts. ‘Any provision in a construction agreement that requires a person to indemnify, insure or defend in litigation another person against liability for damage arising out of death or bodily injury to persons or damage to property caused by the negligence or fault of the indemnitee or any third party under the control or supervision of the indemnitee is void as against public policy and unenforceable.’"
