Skill Standards Are Good for Everyone

Measurable woodworking skills help woodworkers improve and become more successful. Help us advance the Skill Standards initiative by taking a brief online survey.

For more than 20 years the industry has been “talking” about setting standards. The Woodwork Career Alliance of North America is actually developing Skill Standards using funds from a matching grant provided by the USDA Forest Service.

Will you take four minutes to have your say about the Skill Standards initiative? Click here to take the survey or, if you are curious to know more before you do so, visit www.woodworkcareer.org.

Legislative News

Financial Rescue Bill Aims to Lift Sinking Economy

As the turmoil in the construction industry continues fueled by the credit crunch and increased material and transportation costs, no one appears to be exempt from the carnage on Wall Street.   Passage of financial rescue legislation by Congress on October 3 is expected to bring relief, but not in the short term.

On a fast track last week, the bailout legislation permits the Treasury Department to purchase bad debts and includes tax breaks reportedly worth $108 billion to businesses and families in 2009. The measure also temporarily increases the $100,000 limit on federal insurance for bank deposits to $250,000.  Further, the bill extends tax relief for one year, patching the Alternative Minimum Tax, and limits “golden parachute” severance packages for executives of finance firms.

For more details about the contents of the bill passed initially by the Senate, go to the washingtonpost.com (free subscription) for its Thursday, Oct. 2nd edition.  For other perspectives about the effect of the package on credit markets, go to the www.washingtonpost.com for its Friday, Oct. 3rd edition. See “Rescue Package May Not Fully Thaw Credit Markets.” This article contains comments from financial officials about the market for commercial paper that companies use to borrow money.  By stuffing the bill with pork, the Senate compelled the House to pass the measure on its second round.

Stay tuned as more details evolve about how the Treasury Department implements this landmark legislation and whether yesterday’s lending rate cut to 1.5% by the Fed will shore up the market.  According to Reed Construction Data Chief Economist Jim Haughey, “the credit crunch will worsen before the Treasury fix takes hold.”
