The Secrets Are in the Numbers

A Conversation with Marc Sanderson, Wilkie Sanderson

"If you are your organization’s CFO, would you fire yourself?" Learn the secrets of success that only financial trends reveal.

If you answer "yes" then you should attend two interactive sessions that Marc Sanderson, President and Owner of Wilkie Sanderson, will conduct on "The Cost of Doing Business," October 29 during the 2010 AWI Annual Convention in Denver. If you answer "no," then you should attend the session anyway. Regardless, you will take away "knowledge and action steps" you can put to use immediately, Sanderson said.

"In these economic times, if you don’t understand the numbers, you won’t have the tools to survive," Marc Sanderson of Wilkie Sanderson told AWI e-briefs. "In our industry, management tends to focus on controlling costs on the plant floor," he said. Sanderson singled out the Chief Financial Officer as a critical member of the management team, a craftsman who can examine a company’s financial reports and apply them to every aspect of operations.

During the upcoming AWI seminar sessions Sanderson plans to review the numbers in the 2010 AWI Cost of Doing Business Survey and Compensation Study Report and offer recommendations for attendees to turn their numbers into action. "Comparing your financials to the benchmark numbers in the CODBS Report is not enough," Sanderson said. "Turning the numbers into action items is the secret to cost-efficient business management and profitable growth," he said. Here’s his plan for the seminar sessions:

Step 1: Attendees will look at the CODBS Report benchmark numbers.
Step 2: Sanderson will explain how they can compare their financials to the benchmark numbers and industry averages in the Report.
Step 3: Sanderson and attendees will discuss what to do about favorable and unfavorable comparisons.

Sanderson will help attendees understand annual trends, the major benchmarks on which to focus, and the best way to view EBIT (earnings before interest and tax) and EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, deprecation and amortization) – indicators of a company’s profitability.

The interactive format will include a lively question and answer forum and discussions among attendees. "I won’t be delivering a traditional PowerPoint presentation monologue," Sanderson said.

Virginia Tech Workshop for Rough Mill Yield Improvement

Virginia Tech and Virginia Cooperative Extension in conjunction with the USDA Forest Service's Wood Education and Resource Center (WERC) will host a workshop on "Rough Mill Yield Improvement Using ROMI 3.1" on November 8, 2010 at the Wood Education and Resource Center (WERC) in Princeton, WV from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.

The "Rough Mill Yield Improvement Using ROMI 3.1" workshop is designed to help rough mill managers, supervisors, and operators to improve the performance of their rough mill, achieve reliable quality and deliveries, and decrease costs.

Workshop participants will learn how to use the power of the USDA Forest Service's ROMI 3.1 rough mill simulation tool to assess improvement scenarios. Participants also will learn about the new least-cost lumber grade-mix solver function embedded in ROMI 3.1. The least-cost lumber grade-mix solver allows mills to find the lumber grade mix satisfying their cutting bills at the least cost. The solver is especially helpful in times like now when lumber prices fluctuate heavily and the purchasing needs have to be optimized on a regular basis.

Personnel from Virginia Tech and the USDA Forest Service will help workshop participants install, set-up, and run simulations looking at issues in their own rough mill. Participants are asked to bring their own laptops so that the installed copy of the ROMI 3.1 software can be brought home and be used again. Copies of the ROMI 3.1 will be distributed free of charge.

Construction Unemployment Decreases in June

Total payroll employment declined by 125,000 in June, and the unemployment rate edged down to 9.5 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Construction employment decreased by 22,000 in June.

The decline in overall payroll employment reflected a decrease (-225,000) in the number of temporary employees working on Census 2010. Private-sector payroll employment edged up by 83,000.

In the construction employment sector, the largest decline occurred in nonresidential specialty trade contracting. On net, construction employment has shown little change over the last 4 months, according to BLS.

Multifamily Construction Continued Decline, but Growth Is Ahead

While multifamily construction spending still continues to decline, the good news is that single-family construction is advancing slowly.

The combination of the now expired home buyer tax credit, historically low interest rates and the improving employment picture has propelled single-family construction forward over the past 12 months as measured by the value of construction put in place, according to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

Although the value of single-family construction only rose 0.8% at a seasonally adjusted annual rate in May, it was still up 32.1% from a year earlier — when construction activity was at an extremely low level, NAHB reported.

Unfortunately, the slowdown in multifamily construction spending continued in May, falling 6.3% from April and plummeting 57.7% from a year earlier, reflecting the cumulative effects of the lack of financing for new projects and the gradual tapering off of multifamily construction starts since fall 2009.

May starts and permit numbers were up and if that improvement continues, the NAHB predicts that the value of multifamily construction put in place will be on an upward trajectory in the next few months.

DHI Joins ConsensusDOCS Coalition

The Door and Hardware Institute (DHI) has joined the ConsensusDOCS coalition, which creates standard contract documents for use by all participants in the construction industry.

"DHI’s base of more than 5,000 professional members representing contract door and hardware distributors, manufacturers, and independent sales agents across the U.S., Canada and abroad," according to a ConcensusDocs release.

DHI joins 23 other leading construction industry associations in support of the ConsensusDOCS contract documents.

ConsensusDOCS contracts are the first and only industry standard contracts written and endorsed by 24 leading construction organizations. Offering a catalog of more than 90 contract documents covering all methods of project delivery, ConsensusDOCS contracts incorporate fair risk allocation and best practices to represent the project’s best interests. Safety Matters

Hundreds Participate in OSHA Combustible Dust Meeting

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) held its first virtual stakeholder meeting June 28 to seek input about combustible dust workplace hazards. More than 400 people participated in the live event and more than 100 others have read the archived chat online since then.

During the one hour event, OSHA published 160 comments to the chat window and provided 58 responses. Go to the Combustible Dust Web Chat page to read the comments and responses. OSHA will monitor the site, provide additional information and pose follow-up questions when appropriate.

Fourth Certified Wood Benchmark Comment Period Closed

Prior to the deadline for comments on the Certified Wood Standard proposed by the U.S. Green Building Council, the Forest Stewardship Council submitted their comments. There is a lot at stake among competing certification bodies. See what the FSC submitted.

FSC Launches Revised U.S. Forest Management Standard

The United States national office of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC–US) recently announced the launch of the revised FSC-US Forest Management Standard for forest operations in the contiguous U.S.

The revised standard has been approved by FSC International which requires all accredited forest management standards based on its 10 Principles and 56 Criteria to undergo a review and consider necessary revision every five years.

According to FSC, the revised U.S. Standard marks the end of a three year review and revision process concentrating on the myriad environmental, social, and economic values associated with forests and forest products. The revised standard harmonizes nine regional standards into one national standard to reduce complexity and improve efficiencies in the management and auditing process. Regional variation is maintained in key areas of forest management and conservation where local conditions, including forest types and ecological processes, warrant different management techniques.

FSC governance and procedures for standards and policy-setting are founded on stakeholder collaboration and transparency.

The new standard retains key environmental, social, and economic concepts from the regional standards, but improves consistency and clarity in application, FSC announced. The distinguishing hallmarks of FSC certification remain intact in the revision, including old growth protection, restrictions on conversion and clearcuts, restrictions on chemical use, and consultation with community groups, and protection of indigenous people’s rights, FSC reported.

The Family Forest Indicators are designed to reflect that certain FSC criteria (such as the capacity for forest management to affect local economies, larger social conditions, and large scale ecological processes) may not apply to family forests individually. Additionally, the certification procedures take into account the potential cumulative impacts of multiple family forests in close proximity on these same issues. In some cases new indicators have been developed to address conditions unique to small ownerships, according to FSC.

The revised standard is available for use immediately and all forests seeking FSC-certification but not currently FSC-certified should be evaluated to this revised standard. Those forests that are currently FSC-certified will have until October 8, 2011 to be in conformance to this standard.

Fall NexGen Dates, Educational Seminars Announced

The NexGen Event continues with this unique cooperation as competitors, coined "coop-etition." This fall’s NexGen, the second one this year, will be held October 5-7, 2010 in North Carolina.

The NexGen Event enables the participating companies to cost-effectively showcase their products within their own facilities. Each facility will feature their latest machinery in operation and experts will be on hand to answer questions. Formaldehyde Emission Legislation Signed into Law

The U.S. Congress has approved legislation (S. 1660), signed into law on July 7, 2010 by President Obama, that limits the allowable emissions of formaldehyde from specific composite wood products, hardwood plywood, particleboard and medium-density fiberboard sold in the United States.

The Formaldehyde Standards for Composite Woods Products Act amends the 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act by requiring the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to implement formaldehyde emission standards originally established by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) by 2013.

The new federal law restricts formaldehyde emissions from composite wood products sold, supplied, or manufactured in the U.S., including those imported from foreign countries. "The result will be the toughest production standard in the world, including provisions to ensure that products made with composite wood panels meet the standing," said the Composite Panel Association (CPA).

Although the regulations put the national emissions standards in place as early as July of 2011 and 2012, the EPA has an additional two and a half years – until January 2013 – to promulgate regulations to implement the standards and retailers will be allowed to "sell-through" their inventory beyond that date. Other sources of formaldehyde other than its use in building products are not addressed by the legislation, according to the Hardwood Plywood and Veneer Association (HPVA).

There is a labeling option in the federal legislation for indicating "no-added formaldehyde-base binder." Over half of the hardwood plywood manufactured in North America uses these types of resin systems and about 60% of the North American produced hardwood plywood is exempt from the lowest emission standards of the panel products regulated by this new federal law, HPVA noted.

EPA’s implementing regulations will ensure compliance equivalent to compliance with the California standing, including its provisions relating to labeling, chain of custody requirements, sell-through provisions, ultra-low-emitting formaldehyde resins, no-added formaldehyde resins, finished goods, third-party testing and certification, auditing and reporting of third-party certifiers, record-keeping and enforcement, as well as import regulations.

Compliance Delayed for Renovation, Repair & Painting Rule

The Environmental Protection Agency is granting contractors and workers additional time to obtain necessary training and certifications to comply with the Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule. The current law addresses most pre-1978 housing, and child-care facilities and schools.

Acknowledging the difficulties experienced in obtaining the required certification and renovation worker training by the previous deadline of April 23, 2010, the new EPA guidelines are:

  • Until October 1, 2010, EPA will not take enforcement action for violations of the RRP Rules certification requirement. 
  • EPA will not enforce against individual renovation workers if the person has applied to, or has enrolled in, a certified renovator class by September 30, 2010. Renovators must complete the training by December 31, 2010.

Meanwhile, a coalition of housing groups led by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) has formed to sue the EPA over the "op-out" provision, which expired on July 6. NAHB pointed out that the Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule now applies to all homes built before 1978, in effect making "the regulation apply to homes where no small children – the target of the rule – even live." According to Nation’s Building News (free subscription), "the group challenged the EPA’s action on the grounds that the agency substantially amended its lead paint rule without considering any new scientific data and before it was even put into place in April."

WDMA estimates that compliance with the rule will add $60 to $170 per window opening on a typical professionally installed retrofit project," according to a report in Woodworking Network (free subscription). Added prep time and material costs reportedly increase the installation costs.

$30 Billion Small Business Lending Fund Includes Construction Loans

Relief may be in sight for small businesses seeking loans. The House of Representatives passed H.R. 5297, the Small Business Lending Fund Act of 2010, which includes an amendment giving builders the same access as other small businesses to loans from a $30 billion program the legislation creates.

The National Association of Home Builders supported the amendment and lobbied aggressively for its inclusion just before the measure passed the House on a vote of 418 to three. The NAHB said the legislation doesn’t resolve the credit crunch, but is a step forward to end the construction lending crisis.

IRS Requests Public Input on Expanded Information Reporting Requirement

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is inviting public comment on how to most effectively carry out a law change that, starting in 2012, will require businesses to report a wider range of payments to contractors, vendors and others, usually on Form 1099.

These comments will help the IRS issue guidance that implements this provision in a manner that minimizes burden and avoids duplicate reporting, the agency reported.

Under a proposed regulation, many business purchases made with credit or debit cards would be exempt from the new reporting requirement because they are already reported by banks and other payment processors. The IRS seeks comments on additional circumstances in which duplicate reporting might otherwise occur and on rules that would prevent such duplicate reporting.

The change, enacted in March but not effective until 2012, expanded existing reporting requirements to include a business’s payments related to goods and other property, and payments to most corporations. With some exceptions, payments to corporations are currently exempt from this requirement.

AWI Chicago Chapter & Members Host Veneer Presentation

Members of the AWI Chicago Chapter hosted "A Peer into Veneer & Suitable Substrates" presentation for RTKL Architects, a national firm with offices in several U.S. locations, including Chicago. Aetna Plywood, a local AWI material supplier, and Great Lakes Wood Products co-sponsored the event on July 13 at RTKL’s Michigan Avenue offices.

Kevin Forestall provided live pieces of veneer for demonstration during the presentation. "The program is an excellent example of outreach to the design community," said AWI Executive Vice President Phil Duvic.
