AWI Extends Early Bird Convention Registration Rates

AWI leadership wants to help you out. That’s why early bird registration fees for the AWI Convention have been extended through September 30, when registration ends for the 59th AWI Annual Convention, October 26-28, 2011.

Competitive Dynamics: Become a Driver

Have you relinquished power to general contractors and architects? Have you determined the formula for successfully competing for projects other than on price? What are businesses doing to set themselves apart from the average operating firm?

"Many woodworkers give away power, particularly those who compete for public bid projects that are awarded solely based on price. Other woodworkers have chosen different routes as high profit firms by focusing on a certain market – e.g., medical institutions, museums, schools – and branded themselves and their products to gain opportunities to bid on the projects they choose. These companies have carved out a unique position among their competitors in the industry," said Marc Sanderson, President of Wilkie Sanderson, Sauk Rapids, MN.

Hear about the dynamics within various industries and the strategies that successful and not so successful companies employ during Mr. Sanderson’s presentation, October 27th at the AWI 59th Annual Convention in Charlotte, NC. He’ll compare the architectural woodwork industry and other industries, using such examples as woodworking, airlines, and pharmaceuticals.

What does it mean when Mr. Sanderson says, "Each industry hands all participants average profitability based on the industry’s structure. You don’t have to allow this industry’s structure to give you an average profit," Mr. Sanderson told AWI e-briefs. "If you accept that you don’t have to be average within industry, you have tools available from AWI and within your company to achieve high profitability," he said. Mr. Sanderson will give examples of companies in the architectural woodwork industry that differentiate themselves from the competition and the strategies that make them unique.

"Is your organization structured to compete solely on price, thereby giving up power to the architects? Or is your business structured to compete by being unique?" he asked.

He will share insights about strategy and its components, looking at:

1. The industry in which we play.

2. A company’s position in the industry – Who are we in the industry? (e.g., high end millwork, cabinetry, etc.)

3. What we do about it – through an integrated set of activities to maintain the position. (For example: a low end product manufacturer would not purchase high end product machinery.)

"There is a disconnect between what we do and what we will be," Mr. Sanderson said. By discussing low profit vs. high profit firms in various industries, he will help AWI members gain more insight into the dynamics of their relationships with clients.

Clues lie within examining other companies. How does a chain Brazilian Steak House earn a 20-30% in the low-profit, highly competitive restaurant industry? How does Walmart dominate its market? "It’s not just on price," Mr. Sanderson noted. "If there were only one criterion that sets Walmart apart from the competition, their business model could be easily copied. What about their corporate culture, their distribution channels, their UPC coding systems? It is interesting to note that Walmart, Kmart and Target all began competing for business at the same time."

"Highly successful companies have to consistently make high performance a top priority and have a unique set of activities that are integrated. 1+1 can equal 3! All successful organizations are not successful doing only one thing," Mr. Sanderson emphasized.

So, what’s the bottom line? AWI e-briefs wondered. "The trick is we need to learn how to be unique," Mr. Sanderson said. It comes down to the position in the marketplace we choose and what we do with information that can help us realize our potential and our uniqueness."

AWI Invites Manufacturing Members to Speak Out

What do you have to say? The 2011 AWI Manufacturing Member Survey was launched last week to ensure that members get the most of their AWI membership, AWI President Robert Stout announced. Do you have 10 minutes to respond by Wednesday, September 21? Your opinion matters.

"To help us better serve you and your specific needs, we are asking our members to complete a study on our offerings so we can continue to improve the value of your membership and the industry as a whole," Mr. Stout said.

There are two ways to take the study:

What will you find inside? Learn on your own time, anytime...open 24/7. Lessons from 2010 CODBS, "Fundamentals of Estimating," archived "AWI Talk" sessions on the Architectural Woodwork Standards, sustainability, the Quality Certification Program, and more.

AWI members may enter the AWI e-Learning site through the "Members Only" portal on the AWI Web site.

Here’s what you need to do.

1. Go to www.awinet.org.

2. Login FIRST with your AWI member access codes.   

3. Once you are in the "Members Only" section, scroll down on the left menu column and click on "Educational Offerings" to find the "e-Learning" tab. Click on that tab.

4. You will come to a home page of the AWI e-Learning site. Click on "e-learning Portal" at the bottom of that page.

5. If you have not previously established an account, you must register the first time, creating a new account and password of your choice. It is a one-time effort. Registration is free and available exclusively to AWI members.

6. If you haven’t visited the site previously, we recommend that you take the tutorials at the top of the inside home page.

For first-time users, it takes a bit of time to get set up, but it is a one-time effort. Thereafter, you can enter easily and quickly to find what you need.     Demand for Windows and Doors in China Grows Market

    Demand for windows and doors in China is forecast to rise 7.7% annually through 2014. Doors is the smaller segment but will slightly outpace windows.

    Among materials, plastic and wood will outpace metal. The nonresidential market will grow faster than the residential segment, according to a new study, "Windows & Doors in China to 2014," published by Freedonia Industry Research.

    This study analyzes the 251 billion Yuan window and door industry in China. It presents historical demand data for the years 1999, 2004 and 2009, and forecasts for 2014 and 2019 by window and door material (metal, plastic, wood), market (residential, nonresidential) and region (e.g., Central-North, Central-South).

    The study also considers market environment factors, details industry structure, evaluates company market share and profiles 33 industry participants, including Shenyang Yuanda, Beijing Jangho and Panpan Security.

    WMMA & Vance Release New Market Research

    The Wood Machinery Manufacturers of America (WMMA) in partnership with Vance Publishing has released a multi-page look into the needs, goals and future expectations of woodworking customers throughout North America.

    This extensive study into three woodworking markets, Cabinetry, Millwork, and Furniture was recently completed in the first quarter of 2011.     Skill Standards Evaluator Training Proceeds

    The Woodwork Career Alliance (WCA) has announced two more Skill Evaluator training events in October 2011. Space is limited space. Are you interested?

    A woodworker or educator accredited in this one-day training is authorized to run Skill Standard assessments and affix Tool Stamps in the WCA Passports of woodwork professionals.

    WCA / WoodLINKS USA Pen Training Agreement

    WoodLINKS USA and the Woodwork Career Alliance of North America (WCA) have signed a joint educational agreement.

    This agreement will enable WoodLINKS USA teachers to become Trained WCA Evaluators for a reduced cost, and for WoodLINKS USA students to receive up to 5 free tool evaluations. WCA President Scott Nelson noted WCA’s role in developing industry recognized Skill Standards and a Certification system for the wood industry. This agreement furthers the partnership created in 2010 between these two organizations.

    Details of the agreement are as follows:

    1) WoodLINKS USA teachers are eligible to attend evaluator training at no charge. Teachers are responsible for purchasing their own WCA Passport, the application fee and for their travel expenses to/from training. Training availability will be at the discretion of the Chief Evaluator in charge of the training.

    2) WoodLINKS USA students are eligible for 10 free tool stamps (5 tools at level two plus Layout & Measurement). These stamps would encompass 5 tools/operations: Tablesaw (Ripping), Jointer (Edge Jointing), Planer (Face Jointing), Router (Edge Shaping) and Band saw (Rough saw from a pattern). Students are required to purchase their own passport.

    3) Students who successfully complete the above evaluations would receive a WoodLINKS USA Skills Standards Certificate and would be eligible to purchase additional evaluations putting them on the road towards their Green award.

    LEED® 2012 & Pilot Credits Engage FSC & SFI

    "When the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) released LEED Pilot Credit 43 in June, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) was optimistic this signaled a change of direction from the council's unfair treatment of certified wood," the organization said in its latest newsletter.

    "It appeared USGBC was heading in the right direction because Pilot Credit 43 for non-structural wood products such as furniture, flooring and windows lists SFI and other forest certification standards equally in a section on 'pre-approved certifications and labels'," said SFI President and CEO Kathy Abusow. "Barely a month later, USGBC released its proposed updates to LEED's materials and resources credits for commercial and residential construction, and we have taken a step back," Ms. Abusow said.  To view the SFI newsletter, click here.

    Pilot Credit 43

    Ms. Abusow said the best way to keep the positive language in Pilot Credit 43 top of mind is to tell USGBC to extend it to all LEED 2012 rating tools. A few examples why Pilot Credit 43 is positive, according to SFI:

    • It means that all of the certified wood in North America and globally is eligible for this credit.
    • Wood is a renewable resource and third-party forest certification demonstrates that social, economic and environmental values are being addressed.
    • The ability for specifiers and builders to use and get credit for certified wood across North America makes their job easier and it provides the right signal to the marketplace to maintain the extra effort needed to seek and achieve third-party forest certification.
    • With only 10% of the world's forests certified to any forest certification standard, recognizing all the credible forest certification standards means USGBC is providing market transformation which will drive the demand for more certified lands through this pilot credit.

    USGBC uses pilot credits to test drive ideas before making them official LEED credits, and relies heavily on user input. Interested parties may post comments on LEED Pilot Credit 43 through the LEED user forum. There is no deadline for comments.

    LEED 2012 Version 2

    The proposed updates to the materials and resources credits of the LEED rating tools for commercial and residential construction include replacement of the "certified wood" credit with a "responsible sourcing of raw materials" credit. According to SFI, "Wood must be Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Pure (or carry the 100% FSC label), while materials such as steel and concrete can earn credits by meeting four basic criteria for responsible sourcing. The language in the proposed updates means the overwhelming majority of certified wood products in North America cannot earn this credit," Ms. Abusow said.

    Both SFI and FSC call attention to structural wood materials that can earn credits through LEED's recognition of tools, such as life cycle assessment and environmental product declarations.

    FSC’s Take on LEED 2012 Drafts

    According to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), the "current drafts {to the LEED 2012 Rating System} are a big step backwards."

    FSC developed a FSC Guide to Commenting on LEED 2012 in which it states among other things, "LEED 2012 version 2 also seems to be taking an extraordinary step backwards in rewarding wood and other materials simply for being ‘bio-based.’" FSC’s Guide includes general comment suggestions and recommendations.     Tax Treatment of Cell Phones; Small Business Record-keeping Relief

    On September 14, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issued guidance designed to clarify the tax treatment of employer-provided cell phones.

    The guidance relates to a provision in the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010, enacted last fall, that removed cell phones from the definition of listed property, a category under tax law that normally requires additional record-keeping by taxpayers.

    The Notice provides guidance on the treatment of employer- provided cell phones as an excludible fringe benefit. The Notice provides that when an employer provides an employee with a cell phone primarily for noncompensatory business reasons, the business and personal use of the cell phone is generally nontaxable to the employee. The IRS will not require record-keeping of business use in order to receive this tax-free treatment.

    Simultaneously with the Notice, the IRS announced in a memo to its examiners a similar administrative approach that applies with respect to arrangements common to small businesses that provide cash allowances and reimbursements for work-related use of personally-owned cell phones. Under this approach, employers that require employees, primarily for noncompensatory business reasons, to use their personal cell phones for business purposes may treat reimbursements of the employees' expenses for reasonable cell phone coverage as nontaxable. This treatment does not apply to reimbursements of unusual or excessive expenses or to reimbursements made as a substitute for a portion of the employee's regular wages.

    Under the guidance issued, where employers provide cell phones to their employees or where employers reimburse employees for business use of their personal cell phones, tax-free treatment is available without burdensome record-keeping requirements. The guidance does not apply to the provision of cell phones or reimbursement for cell-phone use that is not primarily business related, as such arrangements are generally taxable.

    Public Input Sought on Certain Employer Provisions of the Affordable Care Act

    The Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) on September 13 requested public comment on a proposed affordability safe harbor for employers under the shared responsibility provisions included in the Affordable Care Act that will apply to certain employers starting in 2014.

    Under the Affordable Care Act, employers with 50 or more full-time employees that do not offer affordable health coverage to their full-time employees may be required to make a shared responsibility payment.

    Notice 2011-73, posted on September 13 on www.IRS.gov, solicits public input and comment on a proposed safe harbor, designed to make it easier for employers to determine whether the health coverage they offer is affordable. To that end, Treasury and IRS expect to propose a safe harbor permitting employers that offer coverage to their employees to measure the affordability of that coverage by using wages that the employer paid to an employee, instead of the employee’s household income. This contemplated safe harbor would only apply for purposes of the employer shared responsibility provision, and would not affect employees’ eligibility for health insurance premium tax credits.

    This request for comment is designed to ensure that Treasury and IRS continue to receive broad input from stakeholders on how best to implement the shared responsibility provisions in a way that is administrable, allows flexibility, and minimizes burden. By soliciting comments and feedback now, Treasury and IRS are giving all interested parties the opportunity for input before proposed regulations are issued.

    Safety Matters

    New Educational Video on Preventing Fatal Falls In Residential Construction

    The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has posted compliance tool resources on its Web site.

    OSHA’s narrated Residential Fall Protection slide presentation is the latest compliance assistance tool available to help the residential construction industry comply with the requirements of the agency's Fall Protection standard.

    The presentation describes safety methods for preventing injuries and deaths from falls, and explains techniques currently used by employers during various stages of construction. These techniques include the use of bracket scaffolds, anchors, safety net systems, safety harnesses and lines, and guardrails for activities such as installing roof trusses and sheathing, decking, reroofing and installing walls, among others.

    Falls are the leading cause of death for workers involved in residential construction, OSHA reports. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2009 Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries showed that 78 workers died from falls while constructing residential buildings.

    The two-day event included golf and a boat cruise, sponsored by Lumbermen’s, followed by dinner. The next morning, attendees enjoyed a presentation by Steve Waltman of Stiles Machinery who discussed "How to Survive in Difficult Times."

    Members enjoyed a tour and tasting at Blackstar Farms and L. Mawby Vineyards, as well as a tour of the Leelanau Fruit Company, pictured below. Each participant donned a sanitary cap – and no, it’s not new chapter attire.
