AWI Learning Forum

New Education Outreach Program Launched

The AWI Education Committee has announced a new direction for the association’s education program that will support AWI chapters.

"Our members have been telling us via replies to recent surveys, attendance at recent national Professional Development Seminars and evaluations from the national programs that they want less costly, regional and local education and training opportunities," AWI Education Committee Chair Bruce Spitz reported.

In response to member demand, AWI is suspending multi?day national education. Instead, AWI will take education programs to the chapters at a smaller, more personal level. "We believe this new Education Outreach Program is the best response to recent member input and to our own observations regarding attendance trends at national education sessions," Mr. Spitz noted.

Watchfor AWI communications containing details about the new regional and local approach to AWI education.

This outreach initiative offers a great opportunity for chapters to present additional substantive programs to existing and potential members as well as grow their membership. Interested chapters and members may contact AWI Education Associate Lucy Wesson at lwesson@awinet.org
 for details.

Members’ Financial Needs: You Spoke; AWI Listened

For 2012, AWI's new Financial Management Committee has announced the launch of a new Web-based survey and webinar sessions to ease participation in the improved AWI Cost of Doing Business Survey (CODBS). What’s all the excitement about?

Committee Chairman Sebastien DesMarais explained that "The new Web-based survey and additional webinars address the principal reasons expressed by members for not participating in the annual AWI Cost of Doing Business Survey (CODBS): lack of time to complete the survey; privacy concerns; limited financial knowledge; inability to understand the results and how to use them."

"In addition, past participants in the CODBS have suggested improvements that the NEW Web-based tool should meet: increased participation; ability to track year-over-year trending; more user-friendly instruction," Mr. DesMarais noted.

The online CODBS also addresses two of the top business concerns revealed in the AWI annual membership survey: members’ desire to manage cash flow and financial activities and decrease overhead and G&A costs.

"AWI invested in the new Web-based system to make participation easier and more effective than ever. Considering that industry benchmark reports often cost thousands of dollars to purchase, and also considering that the AWI CODBS is the only custom report targeted for architectural woodworkers, this is a huge opportunity and benefit to all AWI members that we hope to continue improving through the years," Mr. DesMarais said. AWI’s financial support of the Web-based CODBS is expected to offer a quick return on its investment and, furthermore, offers development potential for additional financial management tools and services in the future.

Watch for details about the new features and functionality in the full CODB Survey and a new top-line CODBS "Lite" which will be offered in 2012. Details and eligibility information for new and continuing participants will be featured in the January edition of AWI NewsBriefs, coming to your mailbox mid-month. A webinar will be held February 1, 2012 to ease your way into participation – it’s not as complex as you think. And help is available.

IRS Announces New Federal Tax Return Deadline

The Internal Revenue Service has opened the 2012 tax filing season by announcing that taxpayers have until April 17 to file their tax returns.

The IRS encourages taxpayers to e-file, as it is the best way to ensure accurate tax returns and get faster refunds. "The IRS also announced a number of improvements to help make this tax season easy for taxpayers. This includes new navigation features and helpful information on IRS.gov and a new pilot to allow taxpayers to use interactive video to get help with tax issues," the agency reported.

Taxpayers will have until Tuesday, April 17 to file their 2011 tax returns and pay any tax due because April 15 falls on a Sunday, and Emancipation Day, a holiday observed in the District of Columbia, falls this year on Monday, April 16. According to federal law, District of Columbia holidays impact tax deadlines in the same way that federal holidays do; therefore, all taxpayers will have two extra days to file this year. Taxpayers requesting an extension will have until October 15 to file their 2011 tax returns.

The IRS has also announced a new pilot program where taxpayers can get assistance through two-way video conferencing. The IRS is conducting a limited roll out of this new video conferencing technology at 10 IRS offices and two other sites, and may expand to further sites in the future. A list of locations is available on IRS.gov.

IRS & Treasury Department Publish Temporary Regulations on Treatment of Tangible Property

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Treasury Department published in the Federal Register temporary regulations that provide guidance to taxpayers on the treatment of amounts paid to acquire, produce or improve tangible property and regarding the accounting for, and dispositions of, property subject to depreciation.

These regulations provide objective standards and bright-line rules intended to simplify compliance with the capitalization provisions contained in section 263(a) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Payroll Tax Cut Temporarily Extended into 2012

Nearly 160 million workers will benefit from the extension of the reduced payroll tax rate that has been in effect for 2011.

The Temporary Payroll Tax Cut Continuation Act of 2011 temporarily extends the two percentage point payroll tax cut for employees, continuing the reduction of their Social Security tax withholding rate from 6.2% to 4.2% of wages paid through February 29, 2012. This reduced Social Security withholding will have no effect on employees’ future Social Security benefits.

Employers should implement the new payroll tax rate as soon as possible in 2012 but not later than January 31, 2012. For any Social Security tax over-withheld during January, employers should make an offsetting adjustment in workers’ pay as soon as possible but not later than March 31, 2012.
