AWI Receives Approval as an ANSI Accredited Standards Developer

The announcement was made recently by AWI President Randy Jensen, in keeping with AWI's Vision: To be the global leader in architectural woodwork standards, industry-specific education and member networking opportunities.

Mr. Jensen said, “Since 1961 AWI has actively written and published standards for the architectural woodwork community. Each of these standards was built on consensus across national regions, and each new edition improved upon its predecessor and kept pace with changes in the industry. The new Architectural Woodwork Standards, Edition 2 represents another step of improvement for architectural woodwork standards.

At its January 2014 meeting, AWI’s Board of Directors decided it was time to take our association’s standards development to a higher level by becoming an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Accredited Standards Developer with the goal of achieving ANSI approval of future architectural woodwork standards.
Accordingly, as President of AWI, I am pleased to announce our association has been accepted as an Organizational Member within the ANSI community, and on August 15, 2014 AWI received official approval as an ANSI Accredited Standards Developer (SDO),” Mr. Jensen said.

“Although the AWS Edition 2 became effective on October 1, 2014, the work of writing standards for our industry is not left idle. Right now, AWI’s Technical Committee is actively working on the association’s next generation of standards writing. Procedures for ANSI- approved standards development will further AWI’s ongoing initiative to expand interaction with stakeholders of the industry it serves. In addition to WI and AWMAC, other associations and stakeholders across the spectrum of general interest, users and producers will be invited to engage the process of achieving ANSI-approved architectural woodwork standards. This initiative is a manifestation of AWI’s dedication to the architectural woodwork industry, the need for continuous improvement and new tools for globalizing markets.”

Further, Mr. Jensen noted that some of the anticipated direct benefits of an ANSI-approved standard include: 1) simplified presentation of criteria, 2) improved promotion of our standards internationally, and 3) reduced cost of standards development. Ancillary benefits include: 1) greater use of technology presenting educational aspects of compliance with architectural woodwork standards resulting in 2) more user-friendly instruction and learning.

About QCP

QCP Presents and Learns in San Antonio

By Randy Estabrook, QCC Executive Director

The AWI convention in San Antonio was well attended with over 240 attendees. The Quality Certification Program (QCP) was represented by Randy Estabrook and Joe Fleck. The QCP tabletop exhibit attracted numerous visitors and we provided attendees with QCP hats, flash drives, marker pens, and other branded mementos. Representations from three firms talked with QCP about submitting their application for QCP Licensing which can be completed online

Photo above - QCP Executive Director Randy Estabrook talks with AWI Past President (1995-1996) Craig Johnston.

There were many breakout sessions, including a technology session that QCP representative Joe Fleck liked very much. A new app called Trello was demonstrated by Eric Fetzer. This app can provide users with an interface to list tasks, status reports and completed items in a transparent format. Joe Fleck was very interested in how this may help QCP in the future.

The Plant Tour, always a high point of every AWI event, was well received. We visited Supra Doors which had an impressive tour of their extensive facility just outside San Antonio and demonstrated their unique method of manufacturing MDF full-size doors in many different styles. Supra is currently completing their QCP Licensing process and is scheduled for their plant visit.

The AWI Quality Certification Program (QCP) is a valuable quality assurance tool that ensures custom, interior architectural woodwork, one of the most highly visible aspects of many construction projects. Launched in 1995, the QCP is endorsed by the American Subcontractors Association (ASA). For information about the program and licensing, visit

Hollywood Woodwork Receives Mayoral Proclamation

Hollywood Woodwork was honored on October 7 at the Broward County (FL) Commission meeting with a proclamation by Mayor Barbara Sharief. The Mayor, cognizant of the role of small businesses in the growth of the community, chooses a business to highlight at each County Commission meeting. Sebastien DesMarais, Chief Financial Officer, received the award on behalf of Hollywood Woodwork

Hollywood Woodwork has been deeply involved in training programs with the county. Recently, the company implemented Quick Response Training and Incumbent Worker Training grants to facilitate training for new and existing employees in 2014 and 2015. They have also recently expanded their operation and purchased new manufacturing equipment, benefiting from the State of Florida’s Sales Tax Exemption on Manufacturing Equipment.

Providing ongoing growth and training opportunities is an integral part of the vision of Hollywood Woodwork. As an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) company, each employee-owner is a stakeholder in its success.

Florida-based Hollywood Woodwork has been an AWI Manufacturing Member since 1981. Mr. DesMarais is currently serving as Chair of the AWI Financial Management Task Force and is a presenter of AWI’s popular Money Talk Webinar as well as other forums.

Adopt-a-Shop: Hollywood Woodwork Hosts FIU Interior Architecture Class

Hollywood Woodwork hosted the Interior Architecture class of Florida International University (FIU) on October 28 in a morning orientation to the engineering process and a plant tour.  Dr. Philip Abbott, ASID, IDEC, class professor, is developing coursework that will give his students real-life experience in the interior design career path.  As part of that development the class’ term project is to design a reception desk.  The visit to Hollywood Woodwork allowed the students to view the engineering process from Interior Design drawings through final approved shop drawings for five unique reception desks.

The presentation was followed by a shop tour where the students were able to learn more about the custom woodwork manufacturing process and see some of the reception desks from the engineering presentation that are currently in process on the shop floor.  Dr. Abbott commented on the value of such experiences for his students, bringing theory into much better focus in light of the reality of actual production.

“We are very excited about Dr. Abbott’s vision for the Interior Architecture department at FIU,” said Dave Bolt, Hollywood Woodwork COO.  “We are looking forward to future interactions with his classes.  This allows us to influence future designers with valuable insights regarding the collaborative process that takes place between the designer and the manufacturer in optimal conditions.”

FIU offers a CIDA accredited professional interior architecture education that is ranked 4th best interior design program in the south region of the U.S. Hollywood Woodwork has been an AWI Manufacturing Member since 1981.
