Reducing Turnover to Help Create Lifetime Employees

Employees entering the workforce today are associated with higher turnover rates than prior generations, often citing personal fulfillment as a top priority for their careers. But employers can help reduce the costs and disruptions resulting from high rates of employee departure.

Insperity recommends considering the following steps:

  • To attract long-term employees, businesses should devote ample time and resources to recruiting. Job descriptions and a formal, consistent hiring process should be in place prior to interviews, and background checks should be conducted. Orientation programs are important to help acclimate new employees to their jobs and work environment.
  • Although competitive salaries and benefits are vital recruitment and retention tools, they are not the lone solution. A fulfilling job and work-life balance are critical motivators.
  • It is important to maintain the excitement level employees felt their first day. Employees who clearly understand a company’s expectations and their role in the organization are probably more willing to consider their job as a career. Appropriate goals and expectations must be addressed from the outset.
  • Quality training and development programs offer opportunities to enhance employee skills, providing higher employee satisfaction and productivity levels.
