Firefighter Air Replenishment Systems
San Francisco Fire Commission Supports Changes to FARS Requirements
Recently, the San Francisco Fire Commission voted to recommend a change to the local requirement that all new high rise buildings in San Francisco install the patented firefighter air replenishment system (FARS). This system was designed and patented by Rescue Air and was adopted as a requirement by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in March 2004, over BOMA’s objections.

Now, the Board of Supervisors will again have to approve the Fire Commission’s recent recommendation that the FARS not be required in future high rise buildings if a dedicated reinforced firefighter service elevator is installed.  This is a victory for both the Fire Department, and for the commercial real estate industry.

The Board of Supervisors will need to approve these changes. Once that occurs, the amendments will be effective with the adoption of the 2013 fire code on January 1, 2014.

BOMA has consistently stated that it is the responsibility of the Fire Marshal, and the San Francisco Fire Department to determine the best means to protect their firefighters in any fire emergency. The members of the association have stated that the city should never have mandated a single source patented system over the objections of the Fire Department and preclude any other options.
